Worship the Kitchen God
One of the most distinctive traditions of Little New Year is the burning of a paper image of the Kitchen God, dispatching the god's spirit to Heaven to report on the family's conduct over the past year. The Kitchen God is then welcomed back to the home through the pasting of a new paper image of him beside the stove.
Sweep the Dust
In Chinese, the character for "尘(dust)" is a homophone of the character for “陈”which means "the old". By giving the house a thorough cleanse on the day, Chinese people believe that this would rid them of their poverty and bad luck from the previous year, so as to welcome a prosperous new year.
Take a Bath and Have a Haircut
As the old Chinese saying goes, whether they're rich or poor, people often have a haircut before the Spring Festival. The activity of taking bath and haircut is often taken on Little New Year to meet the New Year's arrival.
Paste Window Decorations
On the day Little New Year, old paper-cuts of the previous Spring Festival are taken down. At the same time, new window decorations are pasted up. There are various kinds of paper-cuts, including animals and plants and so on.
Shop for Spring Festival
The Spring Festival is coming up a week after Little New Year, so people start to prepare for the Spring Festival since that day. Everything needed to treat guests and feed the family must be purchased in advance.
