Administrative Districts

1 Dongcheng District

Dongcheng District is one of the core functional areas of Beijing and covers an area of 41.86 square kilometers. It governs 17 sub-district offices and 177 communities. By the end of 2019, Dongcheng District had a registered population of 0.988 million and a permanent population of 0.794 million, of which 0.154 million are permanent migrants.

Dongcheng District, located on the east side of the central axis of Beijing, is the central area of the ancient capitals of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. It has a history of more than 700 years and contains three world cultural heritage sites, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the Yuhe watercourse in the east section of the Grand Canal. The traditional 7.8 km central axis runs through the whole district, from Yongdingmen to the Bell and Drum Tower. The Temple of Heaven and the Temple of Earth add radiance and beauty to each other. It is the most concentrated area of historical relics, cultural relics, hutongs and Siheyuan.

Dongcheng District integrates diversified cultures of the royal family, Buddhism, Confucianism, Sinology, Guildhall represented by the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Yonghe Temple, the Confucius Temple, the Imperial College, the Temple of Earth, the Ming Dynasty Wall, the Qianmen Embrasured Watchtower, and the Yongdingmen Gate Tower, etc. Dongcheng District is also home to many intangible cultural heritages such as cloisonné artistry and lacquer engraving artistry, which embodies the charm of the ancient imperial culture and folk culture.

2 Xicheng District

Xicheng District is a core district fulfilling functions of the capital and is an important window for displaying China’s national image and facilitation of international exchanges. It is also a critical district to Beijing’s protection of historical and cultural relics. Xicheng District covers an area of 50.7 square kilometers and has jurisdiction over 15 sub-districts and 261 communities. In the year of 2019, Xicheng District’s GDP reached 500.73 billion yuan, up by 6.1% compared with the previous year; the secondary industry contributed an added value of 27.88 billion yuan, and the tertiary industry added 472.85 billion yuan, accounting for 94.4% of the district GDP.

Xicheng District blends imperial and folk culture and is located where the city was built over 3,000 years ago and the capital functions converged over 800 years ago. It is home to 18 conservation districts of historic sites including Shichahai and Dashilan; 181 cultural relics under different levels of protection including Beihai, Jingshan Mountain and Prince Gong’s Mansion, 42 of which are under national-level protection; 162 protection projects of intangible cultural heritage, 36 of which are under national-level protection. Scenic spots are abundant in the district, including famous sites such as Yuetan Park, Temple of Ancient Monarchs, Taoranting Park, Beijing Grand View Garden, and Prince Chun’s Garden.

Xicheng District is home to top modern cultural facilities in China, such as the National Center for the Performing Arts and Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. It is also the base of national-level cultural and arts performing groups such as China National Peking Opera Company, National Theatre Company of China, National Ballet of China and China Broadcasting Performing Arts Troupe, as well as cultural exchange institutes such as the Geological Museum of China, Capital Museum, Beijing Planetarium, Beijing Xuannan Culture Museum and the Confucius Institute.

3 Chaoyang District

Chaoyang District is one of the six urban districts in Beijing. It is named for it being situated outside Chaoyang Gate. It is located in the south central part of Beijing with an area of 470.8 square kilometers. By the end of 2019, the permanent population of the whole district was 3.473 million.

Chaoyang District, an important center for foreign affairs, has gathered nearly 100% of foreign embassies in China, the capital's 90% international media organizations, 80% international organizations and international chambers of commerce, more than 70% international investment companies and regional headquarters, more than 65%  foreign-invested financial institutions and 50% foreign population. Chaoyang District is a centralized region for the foreign community. Wangjing, Maizidian, Asian Games Village, Sanlitun, Jianwai and other subdistricts all have international communities.

Chaoyang District is an area for the international exchange in the fileds of science, technology, culture, and sports in Beijing. As a national high-tech park, Zhongguancun Chaoyang Park strives to develop high-end industries such as mobile communications and information services, new energy, advanced equipment, and biomedicine. It is a gathering place for international R&D innovation and serves as a growth pole for strategic emerging industries. Chaoyang District is rich in cultural and athletics resources with a large number of national cultural facilities such as the Workers' Stadium,National Olympic Sports Center , and the Capital Library.

4 Haidian District

Haidian District is located in the northwest of Beijing, with an area of 430.77 square kilometers. By the end of 2019, there were 3.237 million permanent residents in this district. In 2019, the GDP of Haidian District was 792.6 billion yuan, an increase of 7.0% over the previous year and accounting for 22.4% of the city's GDP. This increase helped Haidian District rank first among Beijing's districts in terms of GDP and third in terms of growth rate.

Haidian is a renowned scientific, educational, and cultural district in China. It has 83 colleges and universities represented by Peking University and Tsinghua University, 138 scientific research institutes represented by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 29 national engineering research centers, and 73 national key laboratories.

Zhongguancun gathers important national scientific and technological strategic resources, contains a powerful driving force for technological innovation, and has the largest number of high-tech enterprises for independent innovation.

Haidian District prides itself in containing many places of interest and rich tourism resources, including Xiangshan Mountain, Yuquan Mountain, Wanshou Mountain, Jingyi Garden, Jingming Garden, Summer Palace, Changchun Garden, Yuanmingyuan Park, Wofo Temple, Dajue Temple, and Biyun Temple, etc.

5 Fengtai District

Fengtai District, one of the six urban districts of Beijing, is a central district of the capital and a major district which is endowed with the core functions of the capital. Located in the south of Beijing, Fengtai District covers a total area of 306 square kilometers.

Fengtai District now has 14 sub-district offices, 2 semi-urban area offices, 3 townships and 2 towns, with jurisdiction over 323 communities and 64 administrative villages. By the end of 2019, the permanent population of the whole district totaled 2.025 million.

Mobility is convenient in Fengtai District as it is home to important transportation hubs and nodes such as Beijing West Railway Station and Beijing South Railway Station. Fengtai Railway Station is currently under construction and Lize City Terminal is being planned. In September 2019, the Caoqiao Station of the Airport Express Line was completed; passengers can now directly check in and check baggage here and then arrive at Daxing International Airport within 20 minutes.

Beijing Garden Expo Park, located within Fengtai District, is the site hosting the 9th China (Beijing) International Garden Expo and a national 4A-level tourist attraction. It has turned a construction waste landfill of more than 20 hectares into a sunken flower valley where colorful flowers blossom, exemplary of the “making the ugly beautiful” ecological transformation and restoration.

Lize Financial Business District is the last large-scale development area within the Third Ring Road. According to the functional positioning specified in the latest Beijing Urban Master Plan, Lize Financial Business District is an clustering area of emerging financial industry and a pilot area for financial reform of the capital.

6 Shijingshan District

Shijingshan District is located in the west of Beijing, covering a total area of 85.74 square kilometers. It has 9 sub-districts including Babaoshan, Laoshan, Bajiao, Gucheng, Pingguoyuan, Jindingjie, Guangning, Wulituo, and Lugu. By the end of 2019, the number of permanent residents in the district totaled 572,000.

Shijingshan District is one of the central urban districts of Beijing. Located only 14 kilometers away from Tian'anmen Square, it is superior in terms of geographical location and convenient in transportation. The Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport can be reached within one hour. The S1 Line, Beijing's first magnetic levitation rail line, goes westward through the district and connects Mentougou. Metro Line 1, Line 6, and Line 11 run through the whole district, enabling the district to be closely connected to the Central Business District, Beijing Financial Street, Zhongguancun, and other key areas for improved exchange and interaction.

Shijingshan District is home to the Shijingshan Park of Zhongguancun Science Park, New Shougang Comprehensive High-End Industry Services Park, and Beijing Banking & Insurance Business Park, a globally influential demonstration area for banking and insurance innovation and development.

The Shougang Ski-jumping Platform within the district will be the venue for the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events in the upcoming 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games. After that, the Shougang Ski-jumping Platform will be the world's first ski-jumping venue to remain permanently in use for both domestic and international ski-jumping competitions.

7 Tongzhou District

Located in the southeast of Beijing and the north of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Tongzhou District, home to Beijing's sub-center, covers an area of 906 square kilometers. With a long history, human activities were found in the district as early as the Neolithic Age. It has been established and administered over 2200 years, under the profound impacts of the canal culture.

Tongzhou District is affected by the continental monsoon climate, forming a dry and windy spring, a hot and rainy summer, a clear-sky and cool autumn and a cold and dry winter. The annual average temperature is 11.3℃, and the precipitation is about 620 mm.

Regional advantages are obvious in Tongzhou. The district is close to Beijing's Central Business District (CBD), 13 kilometers to the west from the International Trade Center and 16 kilometers to the north from the Capital Airport. Bordering Tianjin and Hebei, its location provides a conducive environment for the capital to participate in the coordinated development of the BTH Region.

In the future, starting from Tongzhou District, you can get the Capital International Airport within 15 minutes, 35 minutes to the Daxing International Airport and just 1 hour to the Xiong'an New Area.

8 Daxing District

Thirteen kilometers from Tiananmen Square,Daxing District is located in the south of Beijing, covering an area of 1,036 square kilometers. The district is the nearest outer suburb to Beijing city. It is one of the first batch of key satellite districts of the capital approved by the State Council in 1984. Yizhuang, the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone, aims to build a supporting zone with global impact for the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements.

Daxing District has a long history of more than 2400 years since its establishment in the pre-Qin period. And it is one of the earliest counties in China. The airport industry in Daxing District has developed rapidly. Beijing Daxing International Airport has successfully opened. The key transportation networks such as Daxing Airport Expressway, rail transit Daxing Airport Line and Beijing-Xiong'an Intercity Railway have opened simultaneously.

9 Fangshan District

Fangshan District is located in the southwest of Beijing, covering a total area of 2019 square kilometers. By the end of 2019, the permanent resident population of the district was 1.255 million, with a total financial capacity of 45.335 billion yuan. The district, with a long history, has the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian of 700,000 years, the Liulihe Xizhou Dynasty Yan Dou Site of 3063 years and the Jin Dynasty imperial tombs of 860 years. It has a superior ecological environment. There are Fangshan Global Geopark of China, Shangfangshan National Forest Park, the oldest secondary forest in North China, and the largest group of karst caves in North China, such as Shihua Cave and Yinhu Karst Cave. The transportation of Fangshan District is convenient. It has major transportation routes such as Beijing-Hong Kong- Macao, Beijing-Kunming and Beijing-Xiong'an Expressway which is under construction, as well as rail transportation such as Fangshan Line and Yanfang Line. It is only half an hour's drive from Beijing Daxing International Airport and within one hour's drive from Xiong'an new area and the core area of the capital.

10 Mentougou District

Mentougou District is located in the western mountainous area of Beijing with a total area of 1455 square kilometers. Situated in the middle latitudes, it has a continental monsoon climate with a dry and windy spring, a hot and rainy summer, a cool and humid autumn and a cold and dry winter. By the end of 2019, the district's permanent resident population was 344,000. The district's GDP of 2019 marked 24.93 billion yuan.

Tanzhe Temple in the district, built in the Jin Dynasty, is the oldest temple in Beijing. The temple, the largest ancient temple complex in the suburbs of Beijing, still maintains the decor of the Ming and Qing dynasties, after experiencing the past times of Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing.

11 Changping District

Changping District, located in northwestern Beijing, covers an area of 1343.5 square kilometers with 6,000 years of civilization and 2,000 years of establishment. The district is a well-known cultural tourist area where there are two world cultural heritage sites, the Ming Tombs and the Juyongguan Great Wall. It is a district of innovation and vitality, aiming at building the main platform of the National Sci-Tech Innovation Center. Universities, research institutes and high-tech enterprises are gathering here. It is an important part of the core area of Zhongguancun National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone and is committed to building a world-class new science and education zone.

12 Shunyi District

Sitting in northeastern Beijing, 30 kilometers away from the downtown, Shunyi District is adjacent to the sub-city center of Beijing. It is the site of the Capital International Airport. The district has a total area of 1021 square kilometers, of which the plain area accounts for 95.7%. The district has a permanent population of 1.228 million, and has 19 organizational towns and 6 sub-district offices under its jurisdiction. The district is of a temperate continental semi-humid monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature is 11.5℃, annual sunshine hours 2746, annual relative humidity 58%, the frost-free period 195 days or so, and the annual rainfall 610 mm.

Shunyi District has well-developed transportation facilities, with nearly 100 million passenger trips per year, ranking second in the world. Inside the district, there is the Capital International Airport, applying the 144-hour visa-free transit policy; 2 subways and 6 expressways. The road network density ranks the first in the new capital city. It enjoys a high level of internationalization, with the Shunyi Foreign Entry-Exit Service Hall and 10 special policies. The Beijing Tianzhu Free Trade Zone (FTZ) incubated in the district is Beijing's, even China's only comprehensive bonded zone that includes airport cargo ports. The FTZ functions as a bonded zone for foreign goods, facilitating a duty-free transfer of goods within the zone and tax refunding for domestic goods entering the zone. At present, Shunyi District is  a core area of international aviation center with the city and air harbor, a leading area for regional economic promotion and development driven by innovation, and a harmonious and livable demonstration area of the capital with urban and rural coordination.

13 Miyun District

Located in the northeastern part of Beijing, Miyun District functions as an important drinking water source for Beijing, and also an eco-conservation area.The district is home to 503,000 population. With a total area of 2229.45 square kilometers (the largest district of Beijing), it covers two streets, 17 towns and 1 village (regional office). Situated in the center of the district, the Miyun Reservoir plays a significant role in supplying drinking water for Beijing, with a maximum water surface area of 188 square kilometers and a maximum storage capacity of 4.375 billion cubic meters.

Miyun District is China's national ecological zone and a world known recreational and livable site. The forest coverage rate of the district reached 72.5%. The number of days when the air quality is of or better than Grade II has remained above 80% for four consecutive years. The content of negative oxygen ions in the air is 40 times higher than that in the urban area, the ecological quality ranking No.1 of the whole city. Miyun District is a famous “Home of the Longevity” of Beijing, with more than 600 elders over 90 years old.

In 2019, the district's GDP reached 34.09 billion yuan.

14 Huairou District

Huairou District is located in the northeast of Beijing City, with a total area of 2122.8 square kilometers, 89% of which is mountainous area. The district is the second largest area in the city with permanent resident population of 422,000. In 2019, its GDP reached 32.8 billion yuan. Hairou District is in the warm temperature semi-humid climate with four distinct seasons, rain and heat in the same period. It’s humid in summer, cold in winter with little snow. The annual average temperature is from 9 to 13 degrees centigrade.

The name of "Huairou" enjoys a long history, which appeared as early as 1300 years ago in the Tang Dynasty. In 1368 AD, the Ming Dynasty, Huairou County was set up, whose jurisdiction was basically the same as that of today’s Huairou District. Huairou has a beautiful ecological environment and is known as the "Pearl of Beijing Suburb" and the "Backyard of Beijing". APEC meeting and the first and second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and other high-level meetings were successfully held at Yanqi Lake International Convention Center of the district. China Meeting Industry Convention (CMIC) and Beijing International Film Festival have been permanently located in Huairou.

15 Yanqing District

Yanqing District is located in the northwest of Beijing. With an average altitude of over 500 meters, it enjoys cool summer and cold winter, referred to as Beijing's "Summer Resort". Covering a total area of 1993.75 square kilometers, in which 105 are of tropical land, the district is rich in shallow geothermal resources. It has 2800 hours of sunshine a year, the most abundant area of solar energy resources in Beijing. The main peak of Haituo Mountain, located in Yanqing, is 2241 meters above sea level, the second highest in Beijing.

By the end of December 2019, Yanqing District had a permanent population of 357,000.

Yanqing District is the capital's ecological conservation and development area, which has been honored as the National Demonstrative County of Afforestation and the National Forest City. It is widely recognized as Beijing’s green barrier and back garden. Yanqing District has a sound living environment, seated the magnificent Badaling Great Wall and the Guishui Park. The park, the largest water park in Beijing, covers an area of 6,000 mu, and the water area covers 5,000 mu.

Yanqing is the host of the 2019 Beijing World Horticultural Expo, as well as the host of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter ParalympicGames (part of events).

Based on the functionality of the capital's ecological conservation and development, Yanqing District vigorously develops the green economy and strives to build a green, high-tech industrial system with its own characteristics. In 2019, Yanqing’s GRP reached 19,528,590,000 yuan.

16 Pinggu District

Pinggu District, located in the northeast of Beijing, is of a temperate continental monsoon climate, with distinctive four seasons, winter the longest, summer the second and spring and autumn short. The annual average temperature of the district is 11.7℃. Covering 948.24 square kilometers, the district administrates 2 streets, 16 towns and 273 villages. By the end of 2019, the district's permanent population was 462,000.

Pinggu District enjoys a fairly long history. As early as the Paleolithic Age, which was tens of thousands of years or even 100,000 years ago, human beings already started to live on this land. Nearly 6,700 years away from today, Pinggu ancestors created a brilliant and splendid Shangzhai Culture. It is the first national forest urban area of Beijing, and one of Beijing's ecological conservation areas, with the forest coverage rate of 67.94%, ranking the first in Beijing.

Pinggu focuses on the development of agriculture, also referred to as the "Hometown of Peaches" in China, possessing the largest peach garden in the world. It has been awarded as the Most Internationally Influential Tourism County, China's Major Eco-tourism County and the National Demonstrative County for Leisure Agriculture and Rural Tourism. The Jinhai Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center located in this district is the main venue of the 2020 World Leisure Games.
