Nor far from the Forbidden City and Beihai Lake, Shichahai in central Beijing is a historic site consisting of three lakes: Qianhai, Xihai and Houhai. Shichahai literally means "the lake of 10 temples."

Around the lake there are 10 famous Taoist and Buddhist temples and several former royal mansions and gardens.
