Conductor

Marin Alsop

Chief Conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra since 2012, Marin Alsop was the first woman to be awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize by the Tanglewood Music Centre, where she was a student of Leonard Bernstein. An alumni of Yale University, she has been the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2007. In 2008, she launched OrchKids, a programme designed to promote musical education for under-privileged young people in the city. She regularly performs with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras, amongst others. In 2003, she won the Conductor’s Award by the Royal Philharmonic Society, and was named Artist of the Year (Gramophone magazine). She was awarded a MacArthur Foundation scholarship and has twice conducted the “Last Night of The Proms” at the BBC’s music festival in London. CNN named her “one of the seven outstanding women in the world” in 2013. She is an honourary member of the Royal Philharmonic Society and, in 2015, she took over as director of the post-graduate programme in conducting at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In September 2019, Alsop becomes Chief Conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Presenter

The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra

Since its first concert in 1954, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra—Osesp—has undergone major developments, to become an institution that is recognised today for its excellence. Having released over 80 CDs, Osesp has become an integral part of the culture of São Paulo and Brazil as a whole, fostering deep-rooted cultural and social transformations. In 2012, Marin Alsop took over as Chief Conductor. That same year, following concerts at the BBC Proms in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Osesp was described by foreign music critics as one of the leading orchestras on the international circuit. In 2013 Marin Alsop was appointed as Osesp’s Music Director and the orchestra took part in its fourth European tour, performing for the first time—and to great acclaim—at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Berliner Philharmonie, home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Festival Hall in London. In 2014, celebrating its 60th anniversary, Osesp performed the Latin American première of the co-commissioned Concerto for Saxophone by John Adams, and more recently (2016) performed at the leading European Summer Festivals (Edinburgh, BBC Proms and Lucerne).
