Sculpture Garden of China's Anti-Japanese War

2018-10-16

Sculpture Garden of China's Anti-Japanese War was built to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. It is located in the triangle zone between the Wanping Fortress and Beijing-Shijiazhuang Expressway in Fengtai District. With Yongding River to its west, Jingshi Road to the south and Wanping Fortress to the north, the garden covers an area of 20 hectares. In the garden, there are viewing areas such as the Monument of the War of Chinese People's Resistance against Japanese Aggression, statue group area, central square, the Wanping Fortress Wall and the green forests.

The statue group area covers an area of 22,500 square meters. According to the historical process of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, it is divided into four parts: "Japanese Invasion", "Rise for Self-rescue", "Anti-Japanese Battles", and "Justice Prevailing". In the park, 38 column statues are placed with a diameter of 2m and a height of 4.3m. They are bronze casted, weighing 6 tons. With "The National Anthem" as the theme, the statue groups are arranged in the form of traditional Chinese steles and draw on the style of traditional Chinese sculptures. They represent the indomitable national spirit and dauntless heroism of the Chinese people.

The central square is 2,500 square meters, and is decorated with the exquisite granite patterns.  The selected stone comes from the main battlefield of China's anti-Japanese war

The Wanping Fortress Wall is more than 360 years old now with an east-west range of 640m. The marks of the Japanese army's guns bombarding the fortress are still visible on the wall. There is a passage to the wall for overlooking the panoramic view of the Statue Park and the Lugou Bridge.

The green forests in the sculpture garden cover an area of 85,600 square meters. Dozens of trees, shrubs and valuable lawns such as cedar, white bark pine, Persian silk tree, ginkgo, false spirea, forsythia, and midget crabapple are planted and arranged in a staggered and undulating manner.

Standing in the sculpture garden and looking out, you will experience a solemn and stirring feeling from the 38 high and upright monuments, and also have a mixed feeling and a bit of meditation with regard to the turbulent history of the Wanping Fortress Wall.
