White Dagoba in Beihai Park

The White Dagoba is named after its white body. With a height of 35.9m, it adopts a structure of brick, wood and stone, and consists of the base, body, Xianglun (round platforms around the spire) and the sacred tripod. The base, carved in brick-stone structure, is in style of the Mount Sumeru, on which there are three-layered round platforms. The body is round in shape with a maximum diameter of 14m.

It boasts a pattern of golden Tibetan characters on red ground in its middle, symbolizing good luck. At the top of the White Dagoba is the gilt sacred tripod, consisting of the celestial plate, terrestrial plate, the figures of the sun, the moon and flame, meaning that the Buddha harma remains as forever as the heaven and the earth, the sun and the moon, as well as the burning fire. Both the celestial and terrestrial plates are made of gilt bronze. The celestial plate weighs about 1,500kg with a diameter of about 3m, while the terrestrial plate weighs over 2,000kg. There are 16 bronze wind bells hanging around the terrestrial plate. Weighing about 8kg for each one, the bells are designed to scare away birds. The holes on body of the dagoba are designed for ventilation, in order to prevent things inside from being damaged. The dagoba appears with no door or window from the outside. However, there is a wooden pillar inside with a height of 9 zhang (about 30 meters). The box at the top of the wooden pillar contains Buddhist relics, and the well below the pillar preserves the niche for a statue of the Buddha, Buddhist texts and other tools used in religious rites. Most of the things inside are made of paper and wood.
