Beijing's performance to feature science and tech

2018-02-20

As the next host of the Winter Games, Beijing will put on an eight-minute performance at the end of the closing ceremony. Tradition also holds that the Olympic flag will be handed over from Pyeongchang to Beijing.

Famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who also directed a similar performance ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will once again share his vision of his homeland.

But despite his wealth of experience on the Olympic stage, each performance brings unique challenges for Zhang.

“We hope the audience watching it on TV can tell the difference from the show in 2004,” said Zhang Yimou, “It represents China's new progress in science and technology, so it will be totally different. As producers of the two shows, we can see the big difference between the two eight-minute shows. You can tell the country's development, new development. The first mission for the show is to extend the Chinese people's welcome of the 2022 Winter Olympics.”

No doubt the challenges have been met and overcome, and on Sunday, millions of people around the world will be re-introduced to China and begin looking forward to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
