Ge Ware Exhibition

Location: Western Side Hall of the Palace of Prolonging Happiness

The exhibition, “Gold Thread and Iron Wire”, showcases 113 authentic and copied Ge ware items from the Palace Museum collection, as well as 57 sets of relics, intact pieces, ceramic fragments and restored items from other six Chinese museums and cultural relic institutions.

Through three parts: extant and unearthed Ge wares, an investigation into the possible site of the Ge kiln and an introduction to the impact these wares had on the art of porcelain making, the exhibition gives a panorama of the Ge porcelain.

Ge kiln is considered one of the five great types of kilns along with Ru, Ding, Jun, and Guan kilns. The Palace Museum, a national-level museum, houses one of the largest collections of the finest artifacts from these five great kilns, most of which were part of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) emperors’ collection.

The exhibition showcases porcelains that remained intact in the palace and restored pieces from Jingdezhen. All of them have witnessed nearly five centuries of ups and downs. Jingdezhen started its porcelain kilns exclusively serving the Ming court in 1369. Since then, it began to be known as the "porcelain capital" of China.

China has a long history of coinage, which are markedly different from coins produced in the west. The National Museum of China (NMC) exhibits more than 1,700 kinds of ancient Chinese money, ranging from the earliest cowries, spade and knife coins, round coins, the most common circular coins with a square hole, to the machine-made copper or silver coins of the late Qing period.

The National Museum of China (NMC) selects over 100 pieces of representative cultural relics it has collected in recent years for exhibition. The exhibits, with high historical and artistic value, are sorted into five units - bronzes, calligraphy & paintings, sculptures, handicrafts, and treasures returned from overseas. NMC hopes to raise the public awareness of cultural heritage protection and inspire their passion for outstanding traditional Chinese culture through the exhibition.
