CAFA Museum to display 200 wood engraving prints

2017-11-15

More than 200 wood engraving prints make up the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) Art Museum's latest exhibition. The exhibit is the largest display of this type of artwork in China in more than a decade.

According to the exhibition's curator, Wang Huaxiang, the exhibition is divided into three sections - Classic Art, Modern Art and Contemporary Art - to best present the history of these wooden prints, which originate from nine countries and regions, including the UK, the US, France and China.

The CAFA President Fan Di'an noted that wood engraving is a fascinating art form that combines the natural quality of the wood and the emotions of an artist into one work.

According to the curator, the world's oldest dated printed book is a Buddhist scroll discovered in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang in Northwest China's Gansu Province. The scroll was printed in 868, almost 500 years earlier than Europe.

The engraving method that originated in the UK and expanded to other parts in Europe did not reach China until the middle of 20th century, Wang noted.

The exhibition is set to run until December 3.
