2017-09-22

In this golden autumn, the Forbidden City will tell you a story about deer…

A deer-themed exhibition of nearly 70 pieces of deer related artworks is going to be offered. Highlights of the exhibition go to a deer horn chair and a White Jade Statuette of an Immortal with a Ruyi (scepter) and a Deer.

In addition, nine sika deer- two males, five females and two cubs - accompanied by veterinarian arrived in the Forbidden City in Beijing on Thursday, a side attraction of the exhibition. These sika deer from the Chengde Mountain Resort will be on public display from Sept. 26, 2017 to Feb. 28, 2018.

Deer, known for its endurance, grace, and long life, is a Chinese symbol for longevity. The word for deer in Chinese is lu which translates to mean income. Consequently, the combined meanings signify a wish for fame, recognition and a prosperous long life. The Palace Museum has introduced animals and plants related to the royal life to better promote its cultural relics.
