Churches in Northern China

Apart from Buddhist, Daoist temples and mosques, China also has numerous historic churches, particularly in its eastern and central regions. Visitors attend religious services, Bible study and choir, but also come to take selfies and pictures. Here are some of China's best-known churches.

Eastern Church in Beijing

Eastern Church, also named Wangfujing Catholic Church, is located on the eastern side of central Wangfujing Street in Beijing. Built in 1904 in Roman style, it is one of the best-preserved religious sites in Beijing. Trees and grass were planted there and various lighting facilities were installed to compliment the gorgeous building at night. Side windows are carved with colorful glass-made figures that can light the whole space as sunshine pierces through.

Xikai Catholic Church in Tianjin

Xikai Church is also called the "French Church" because it was first built by French bishops. It is located on Dushan Road, Heping District, near Lida International Department Store. The whole church follows the European style, adopting French Romanesque architecture technique. With a height of 45 meters and an area of 1,585 square meters, it is the biggest Catholic Church in Tianjin.

St. Sophia Church in Harbin

Located in the central district of Daoli in Harbin City, St. Sophia Church in Harbin is the largest Eastern Orthodox Church in the Far East region. With a height of 53.35 meters and area of 721 square meters, it is a perfect example of Neo-Byzantine architecture. The main structure is laid out in the shape of a cross with the main hall topped with a huge green-tipped dome. Under the bright sun, it looks quite like the buildings at the Red Square in Moscow. It is one of Harbin’s most magnificent buildings.

St. Michael's Cathedral in Qingdao

St. Michael's Cathedral, also called the Zhejiang Road Catholic Church, is a Catholic church in Qingdao, Shandong Province, and is the seat of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Qingdao. The bell tower of the church is 56 meters high and has been the city's highest building for a long time. Its windows are covered by colorful glass patterns depicting stories from the Bible. The roofs and interior columns are painted yellow and white while the traceries and architraves are painted gold. The gorgeous church has been a popular place for young Catholic couples to hold weddings.

Nanguan Catholic Church in Shenyang

Nanguan Catholic Church, officially the Sacred Heart of Jesus Diocesan Cathedral in Shenyang, is located at 40 Nanlejiao Road in Shenyang, the capital of northeast China’s Liaoning Province. Following Renaissance architectural style, it is a typical gothic building and the Catholic center of northeast China. With a height of 40 meters and an area of 1,100 square meters, the church can hold 1,500 people at a time. The iron gate and the high walls that surround the church leave people with an impression of solemnity and serenity.
