LIU Sha

LIU Sha is the conductor of the Chinese National Orchestra, resident conductor of the China Youth National Orchestra, teacher of Conductor Department of the Central Conservatory of Music, and a member of the Chinese Conductor Society of the Chinese Musicians Association.

LIU Sha learned music from his father at a very early age. In 1997, he was admitted to Conducting Department of Central Conservatory of Music, where he studied symphony conducting from the conductor and educator Professor XU Xin. In the following year, as the assistant conductor of the China Youth National Orchestra he chose his minor of Chinese National Music Conducting, studying from Professor WANG Fujian. During his time in the university, he had accepted the guidance of some world-renowned musicians and conducting professors such as Seiji Ozawa, Rostropovich, Mandi Rodin, Colin Matas, and Gustav Maier. In 2002, LIU Sha graduated with outstanding results and then was recruited by the China Central National Orchestra. He conducted the performances of CCNO in Chinese National Orchestra Competition host by the Ministry of Culture both in 2003 and 2006, which drew the professionals' attention to him. In 2005, he was invited by Singapore's Ministry of Education to take up the position of central judge of Chinese National Music in Singapore Youth Festival. In 2007, he became the guest conductor of Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra by invitation of the Music Office of Hong Kong. In 2008, he was invited to conduct Singapore's Chinese Orchestra for special concerts. He also has had some visiting performances in Japan, Russia, France, the United States, etc., where he received warm welcome and high praises.

TANG Feng Erhu Performing Artist

TANG Feng currently servers as Concert Master of Chinese National Orchestra, First-Grade Performer and Executive Director of Erhu Branch of the Chinese Musicians Association. At the age of seven, he began to play erhu. He was admitted to Primary School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Music in 1978. In 1990, he graduated from Department of Chinese Traditional Music, the Central Conservatory of Music after finishing undergraduate course.

In 1990, he was admitted to Chinese National Orchestra. And since 1996, he has served as Concert Master of this orchestra.

He has recorded and published CDs such as erhu version of violin work The Four Seasons Divertimento (Vivaldi) and Violin Concerto in A minor (Bach), as well as demonstration performance disc Famous Teachers Impart You Erhu Skills and Erhu solo album Song of City.

Composed by TANG Feng, erhu solo Mountain Song won Best Music Award of “Fulitong Cup” International Chinese National Instrumental Solo Contest.

As Concert Master of Chinese National Orchestra, TNAG Feng has been designated by Ministry of Culture, the State Council Information Office and Chinese National Orchestra to perform in a dozen countries across Asia, Europe, America, etc. His performances in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, famous Goldener Saal Wiener Musikverein, Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Ancient Theatre of Helot in Athens and other places have gained extensive popularity.

Chinese National Orchestra

As a national-level orchestra directly under the Ministry of Culture, Chinese National Orchestra, founded in 1960 under the direction of Premier ZHOU Enlai, is regarded as the standard-setter, model and benchmark of China's folk music performance. The Orchestra, made up of folk orchestra, chorus and art creation center, boasts a group of world-renown musicians and sharp-sighted managers. LI Huanzhi (January 1919 to March 2000), famous composer and former Chairman of China Musicians' Association, had served as its first President and now XI Qiang, a member of CPPCC, Chinese string instrument artist and musicologist, is at the wheel.

Chinese National Orchestra not only performs typical traditional music in various forms but dabbles in contemporary Chinese music, western classic music and other genres.

Adhering to popularizing traditional Chinese music and culture, the Orchestra collects, arranges and performs a great variety of excellent folk music and contemporary selected works, adding a glorious stroke to China's traditional music. Chairman MAO Zedong and DENG Xiaoping, Premier ZHOU Enlai as well as foreign heads of state had visited the Orchestra time after time, offering their highly compliments. Over these years, the Orchestra has produced a large number of eminent folk music talents, such as LI Huanzhi, TANG Rongmei, QIN Pengzhang and LIU Wenjin. Moreover, the Orchestra has also cooperated with such famous musicians as Christoph Eschenbach, Jean Michel Jarre, Yo-Yo Ma and Minoru Miki.

Since its inception, the Orchestra has for numerous times visited dozens of countries and regions - Asia, Europe and America, for performance besides tours around China. In 1993, the Orchestra founded the Asia Orchestra together with the Ensemble Nipponia and National Orchestra of Korea to promote art creation and exchanges of Asian folk music. In 1997, the Orchestra toured dozens of cities in America at the invitation of ICM and staged with world-renown cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the Carnegie Hall. In 1998, 1999 and 2010, the Orchestra staged the Grand Spring Festival Concerts at the Golden Hall of Vienna, Austria, whose masterful performance won rousing success and highly praise from local audience and media.

Not only does the Orchestra maintain traditional music genre, but attempt to breathe new life into it by creating innovative shows, such as Golden Melody, Music Gallery, Grand Folk Music, Melody of A Century, My Magnificent Country, Charming Moonlight, as well as annul Mid-autumn Concert held by the NCPA, weekly 'Refined Chinese Music' Concerts, arousing extensive favor from audience and making great contribution for the development of traditional Chinese music.
