A special high-definition display screen was used during the 7th Beijing International Film Festival to wow audiences with a never-before-seen spectacle.

The 8K Full Dome Screen Digital Projection System Technology Exhibition was operated in the dome cinema of the China Science and Technology Museum on April 19, part of a demonstration of the "Tech-Spectacles" Film Panorama section of the festival.

Packed with True8k Digistar 6, a digital dome screen system developed by Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp, the system comes with 10 Christie 30,000-lumen Boxer projectors to offer a combined luminance of 300,000 lumens.

The automatic correction and integration system allows the 10 projectors to be seamlessly integrated and project crystal-clear, magnificent images onto the 30m dome screen, providing audiences with a clear view of every-minute detail of the images.

As one of the developments in big-screen films, the dome screen approach first emerged in the 1970s. The screen in ordinary cinemas adopts a rectangular shape, while that in dome screen halls is hemispheric just like a cauldron enclosing the audience beneath it.

According to a technician from Evans & Sutherland, the 8K full dome screen digital projection system can project 88 megapixel points onto the screen, with effective pixel points achieved being up to 50 million, producing resolution more than 25 and six times that of HDTV and 4K TV, respectively.
