Beijing covers its land with more greenery

2017 marks the 36th year since the voluntary tree planting campaign rolled out across Beijing, as Beijing has planted 202 million trees over the past 36 years, boosting the city’s forest coverage from 12.83 percent to 42.35 percent.

With the land available for the campaign on the decrease, Beijing residents have embraced some new forms of tree planting including adopting and cultivating lawn and woods, donation and others, among which adoption is the most popular.

Every year many institutions and families participate in the adoption out of their will to mark big occasions such as wedding, birthday and army enrollment, said the head of the office.

This year Beijing intends to plant 1 million trees and tend 11 million trees, to build 36 garden-like communities, 6 forest towns and 50 green villages. Meanwhile, forest city initiatives will be pushed forward in Pinggu, Yanqing and Tongzhou districts.
