Haru Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar

Haru Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar

2014-08-12

The second branch of the popular Shunyi restaurant offers high quality, exquisite Japanese food with an international influence. The rolls are creative and well made, and the teppanyaki is excellent. The restaurant is entirely made up of private rooms, so you get your own chef. Don't miss the giant prawns or the cod.

At first glance, Haru appears tranquil. Lounge music jives smoothly in the background and hushed waitresses scuttle, quiet as dormice, around the busy restaurant. But, inside, fires (both metaphorical and real) are blazing, as teppanyaki chefs holed up in the private dining rooms scrape, chop and sizzle. Best of all, Haru now offers a cook-your-own-teppanyaki deal on weekends.

You are suggested to start with the zesty salad (RMB 20) of lettuce, corn and slices of fresh peach. Next, the merry roll (RMB 68) was an assortment of sushi made with love and devotion. Our highlight was the seafood: The prawns are sweet and succulent and the cod perfectly smooth and full-flavored. We then moved on to tender beef slices (RMB 158) with sides of stir-fry vegetables (RMB 25) and a bowl of fried rice (RMB 25). The little details impress; a hot plate sits on the Teppanyaki stove to keep our food warm as well as our pure water sake (RMB 60) in a ceramic bottle. We wished we had discovered this place earlier, but better late than never.

Try also the jumbo bamboo prawns flown over from Vietnam (RMB 68) and its co-star, a cod fish (RMB 65).
