Zheng Xiaoying
Zheng Xiaoying, China's first female conductor, was once Chief Conductor of the China National Opera House and Dean of the conductor department at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She is now Conductor and Art Director of the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra. Although she is 84 years old now, she is still busy with rehearsals and regular performances. She has given thousands of lectures about basic music knowledge and the methodology to appreciate classical music and western opera.
In 1955, Zheng was selected by a famous conductor from the Soviet Union and became his only female student. She went to Moscow to learn conducting. She made her debut, conducting an opera after graduation in the theater of the Kremlin. Zheng became the first female orchestra conductor in the history of New China. She was once hailed as the world's best female conductor by the western media. Besides her professional success, Zheng has made significant contributions to helping the public learn to appreciate western music and opera.
In 1997, six years after she retired, Zheng was about to go to Xiamen to form a philharmonic orchestra there on invitation, but she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Zheng faced her illness calmly. After four months of surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she recovered and stood on the podium again at the age of 68. As she promised, Zheng went to Xiamen and formed the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra. The musicians practice five hours every day and then give a concert each Friday evening. Now the orchestra has become an indispensable part of Xiamen's cultural life.
EOS Orchestra
The EOS Orchestra consists of highly skilled young teachers, orchestral performance students, graduate students from the Orchestral Instruments Department and young artists (they are excellent students who have graduated or about to graduate both in China and overseas) who receive an EOS Fellowship. EOS also regularly invites highly respected musicians from the very finest international orchestras to serve as master teachers guiding the students toward perfection in musical performance. From its inception, EOS has been an energetic and creative force in China’s leading cultural circles.
It has been five years since the EOS Orchestra was initially established in Beijing's renowned Central Conservatory of Music. The EOS Orchestra, with its special blend of artistic musical performance and professional skills training, has become a unique institution in China, without any international counterpart.
In cooperation with the National Center for the Performing Arts, the EOS Orchestra has performed ballet music over 40 times in the form of weekend concerts. In the past year, EOS has performed a cycle of 8 symphonies composed by Gustav Mahler. EOS performs an annual season of regular concerts in the Beijing Concert Hall. It has launched the “U-Music” National University Student Program, which has attracted an increasing number of university students to enter concert halls where they develop a deep appreciation of classical music.
