After achieving fame and success, Colin, a film screenwriter, is full of ambition. He moves from Melbourne to Sydney with his wife Kate, ready to kick-start the second chapter of his career in this "Emerald City". Yet both of them soon find themselves trapped in a constant struggle between profit and idealism.

Stuck in the awkward predicament of critical acclaim but poor box office returns, Colin is increasingly swayed and torn by the manipulations of Elaine, a pushy talent agent, the instigations of Mike, a cynical speculator, and the temptations of Helen, a young actress. Lured by the promise of fame and fortune, and seduced by the city's decadent glamour, everyone is swept up in the vast metropolis, hesitant and constrained by fear of unintended consequences.

When the glittering facade of the Emerald City fades away, each character is forced to make a final choice: how to break free from spiritual confinement and withdraw with dignity, even in defeat.
