As the ontological language of Chinese painting, "lines" trace back to Neolithic painted pottery, matured in Warring States-Qin-Han silk paintings and lacquerware, and peaked in the Tang and Song dynasties. Since the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, literati's in-depth exploration formed the aesthetic paradigm of "building the skeleton with lines".
Tang's Zhang Yanyuan noted: "Depicting objects relies on form, which needs spirit—both root in conception and end with brushwork." Brushes create diverse ink lines, reflecting painters' inner cultivation.
