SHI Yihong's Peking Opera MU Guiying Takes Command

As the Western Xia Regime invades the Song Dynasty, the retired Dowager She, still concerned about state affairs, sends her great-grandchildren Yang Wenguang and Yang Jinhua to Bianliang to gather military intelligence. At this time, Minister of War Wang Qiang recommends his son Wang Lun for the post of Supreme Commander, aiming to seize military power; in contrast, Kou Zhun strongly advocates for the Yang Family generals and proposes a martial contest to select the commander-in-chief.

Wang Lun wins several rounds, but once Yang Wenguang and Yang Jinhua join the contest, they defeat and kill him. Learning the two are descendants of the Yang Family, the emperor orders them to return home with the commander-in-chief seal and invite Mu Guiying to lead the army. Holding a grudge against the emperor’s past harshness and heartlessness, Mu Guiying refuses to serve the government and even blames Wenguang for accepting the seal. It is only after Dowager She reminds her of the greater cause of defending the nation that Mu Guiying finally agrees to take command again.

NCPA Drama A Midsummer Night's Dream

The romantic and lyrical A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies. In 2016, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, the NCPA invited Chris White, co-director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, to direct the NCPA Drama A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is an exploration of Shakespeare's artistic world and a tribute to the literary master.

Four hundred years ago, people in Shakespeare's time believed that if one goes out on a moonlit night without a hat, the moonlight will cause madness and confusion. Only after dawn, the sunlight brings the return of reason so that order can be restored, while doubts and conflicts get resolved. The story takes place between a city and forest, sobriety and slumber, as well as reality and fantasy. Entering the magical forest is like stepping into a chaotic dream, mysterious and silent, but also full of unpredictable elements such as hidden passion and anxiety. The ancient city, on the other hand, represents the social mechanism and the order of social operation, capable of resolving all conflicts. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare never ceases to create chaos and changes between the solemn Athens and the unstrained forest. There is “one story happens within another,” but also the disruption of established character relationships. All these changes begin at the moonlit night and end at dawn.
