China upgrades flood response for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

2025-07-29

China has escalated its flood response efforts for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as heavy rainfall continues to batter northern China.

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters upgraded the flood emergency response to Level III for Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province at 21:00 on July 28. This decision followed forecasts predicting torrential rains from the night of July 28 into July 29 across these areas, with particularly intense downpours expected in central and northeastern Hebei, as well as southwestern and northeastern Beijing. The Central Meteorological Observatory had issued an orange alert for rainstorms earlier that evening.

Persistent heavy rainfall since July 23 has already caused high water levels in reservoirs, triggered river embankment risks, and resulted in severe flooding in some parts of North China. In response to the situation, the headquarters has dispatched three task forces to assist frontline flood control and disaster relief operations in the three provincial-level regions.

Simultaneously, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction has activated a Level IV national disaster relief emergency response for Beijing and Hebei. A separate work team has been sent to assess the damage and guide local relief efforts, particularly focusing on ensuring basic living conditions for affected residents.

To support these regions, an additional 43,000 central relief supplies – including camp beds, towels, blankets, and emergency lights – have been allocated. Furthermore, 2,000 family emergency kits have been provided through the Red Cross Society of China.

The combined efforts aim to bolster the ongoing work of evacuating residents and providing critical disaster relief assistance in the flood-stricken areas.
