As summer vacation approaches, Beijing's major bookstores have launched a range of initiatives to accompany children through the holidays. These include diverse cultural activities, specialty book fairs, creative cultural markets, and thoughtful hosting services. The goal is to make reading the trendiest way to beat the heat and to fill the entire summer with engaging events.
Unique bookstores: wonderful shares invite readers to explore the sea of books
Numerous unique bookstores across Beijing have prepared special summer gifts and are waiting for readers' enthusiastic participation.
PAGEONE Bookstore will host a series of new book-sharing sessions and special exhibitions. On July 12th, it will hold a talk-sharing session titled "Zeng Guofan and the Late Qing Dynasty Turmoil" (曾国藩与晚清大变局) — "The Governor in the Crevice" (《夹缝中的总督》) at its Wudaokou and Beichen Hui stores, and a reading-sharing session themed on "If Life Could Be Reborn" (如果人生可以重来) focusing on Fujimoto Ki's works at its Hutong Garden store. On July 20th, at the Wudaokou and Hutong Garden stores, it will organize a lecture on "Exploring the Real Life Picture of Yuan Dynasty Women" (探索元代女性的真实生活图景) and a reading-sharing session of "Go Inward and Settle Yourself" (《往里走，安顿自己》). On July 26th, at the Beijing Fun store, it will launch the public welfare event "Together Let's Add Clothes—Orphan Painting Becomes Neon Dress, Weaving a Chinese-Style Public Welfare Elegance" ("益"起让好事加衣——孤童画作化身霓裳，共织一场国风公益雅集). From July 20th to September 21st, at the Beijing Fang and Shuangjing stores, the Woolf-themed special exhibition "A Room of One's Own" will be on display. The theme exhibitions of Ge Fei's new work "The Road of Clouds" (《云朵的道路》) and Wang Shuo's works will also meet readers at the Wudaokou and Beijing Fang stores respectively.
The Chunfengzai Bookstore (春风在书店) in Tongzhou District has carefully prepared a "Dive into the Sea of Books" (纵身入书海) summer reading season, offering readers six time-crossing reading journeys. The AI-themed week starts with special book displays such as "The Wave is Coming" (《浪潮将至》), "The AI Era" (《AI时代》), "Write Good Papers—Mind Models and AI-assisted Applications" (《写好论文——思维模型与AI辅助应用》), and "The Rise of Generative AI" (《生成式AI的崛起》), and features a lecture by scholar Yuan Shuo. During the Canal Culture-themed week, it will set up special book displays like "The Legend of the Grand Canal" (《大运河传奇》), "The Grand Canal Floats the Forbidden City" (《大运河漂来紫禁城》), "The Transport Dock" (《漕运码头》) and "Tongzhou Chronicles" (《通州纪事》), and author Wang Lixin of "Tongzhou Chronicles" will also bring a special lecture.
