Exploring Mentougou: A Cultural and Natural Retreat

2025-02-27

Nestled in western Beijing with convenient transportation links, Mentougou captivates visitors with its stunning natural landscapes, nestled against the Taihang Mountains and embraced by the Yongding River. Discover two must-visit destinations here: the dazzling Jinyu Coloured Glaze and the trendy TANKO, a harmonious blend of nature and urban charm.

Jinyu Coloured Glaze

Transformed from a historic imperial kiln, Jinyu Coloured Glaze boasts a legacy spanning over 700 years. As the royal kiln for the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, it supplied glazed tiles for iconic landmarks like the Forbidden City and Summer Palace. In 2008, its glaze-firing techniques were inscribed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, making this park Beijing's first living heritage conservation site.

Strolling through the park feels like entering a kaleidoscopic wonderland, where shimmering glazed artworks mesmerize visitors. The Museum, a highlight, focuses on roof ridge decorations. Its suspended displays recreate the grand roof structure of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, illuminated to evoke mystery and grandeur. Authentic Ming- and Qing-era glazed relics are exhibited here, offering insights into ancient craftsmanship.

Scattered throughout the park, glazed installations gleam under sunlight, narrating centuries of artistic brilliance. For dining, One Step offers unique culinary delights. At the Imperial Kiln Café, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant glazed decor, savor a steak or coffee in a serene, culturally rich ambiance.

TANKO

Located in Mentougou's Tanzhe Temple Town, TANKO is often dubbed "Sanlitun in the Mountains" or "Beijing's Aranya." It combines pristine natural scenery with Instagram-worthy spots. The TANKO commercial district features trendy brands like Cinker Pictures (where you can dine while watching films) and Berry Beans (known for hand-brewed coffee), alongside chic boutiques. Pet owners rejoice—TANKO is a pet-friendly haven where furry companions are welcome to join the fun!
