The musical The Longest Day in Chang'an to premiere in Beijing

2025-02-11

The musical The Longest Day in Chang'an, adapted from the novel by Ma Boyong, which was previously made into a popular television series, vividly portrays the magnificent Tang dynasty city of Chang'an. From February 14 to 16, the Chinese original musical The Longest Day in Chang'an will have its national premiere at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. Characters such as Zhang Xiaojing, Li Mi, Wen Ran, and Tan Qi will be brought to life on stage, showcasing the prosperity and the underlying crisis of Chang'an. On February 7, director Hu Xiaoqing gave an exclusive interview with Beijing Daily's official client, revealing the musical's creative style and artistic features for the first time.

New Storylines for Female Characters

The Longest Day in Chang'an tells the story of events that unfold over 12 hours in the city of Chang'an. Ma Boyong's novel runs over 500,000 words, and the television series consists of 48 episodes. When this story is adapted into a musical, the creative team has simplified the characters and restructured the storylines. Hu Xiaoqing explained that the musical would focus on the story of the former bandit chief Zhang Xiaojing and Li Mi, an officer from the Jing'an Division, as they attempt to resolve a crisis in Chang'an on the eve of the Lantern Festival.

Hu Xiaoqing emphasized that the musical The Longest Day in Chang'an is not just about telling a story of a hero saving the nation, nor is it meant to emphasize Zhang Xiaojing's philosophical statement, "Everyone must take responsibility for their choices." "The strength of a musical lies in its ability to deliver emotional impacts through singing and live performance." She believes that through music, audiences will feel the anguish behind each decision made by Zhang Xiaojing, experiencing a richer emotional journey.

Innovative Approach to Female Roles

What sets this musical apart from the novel and TV series is its innovative approach to female characters. "Although this is a male-centered story, we want Tan Qi and Wen Ran to have their own growth as well," said Hu Xiaoqing. The director emphasized that these characters are not merely waiting to be redeemed by their fathers, husbands, or other male figures. They are no longer just "tools" around the main characters. "In the musical, they take on new responsibilities and are given new relationships. The audience can look forward to this."

Multiple Musical Styles Presenting Thrilling Plotlines

The Longest Day in Chang'an incorporates many investigative elements and suspenseful plots, which will be presented in an entirely new way through the musical form.

"Musicals, unlike plays, cannot afford lengthy setups. Musicals require the trimming and reshaping of plots to condense the most important content," Hu Xiaoqing explained. Many chapters of the original story describe how Zhang Xiaojing and Li Mi use towers to investigate cases and relay information, which is one of the awe-inspiring parts for readers and viewers. The musical will use music to highlight the cooperation between Zhang Xiaojing and Li Mi.

Chang'an, the Tang dynasty capital, was the center of the world, a melting pot of various cultures, and the musical composition of The Longest Day in Chang'an reflects the grandeur of this international metropolis.

Dance performances also play a significant role. "Han and Tang style Chinese dance is an important part of the show, highlighting our ethnic characteristics," said Hu Xiaoqing. Additionally, she revealed that the musical's style is not limited to classical; there are also many modern, energetic dances, including trendy street dance, all performed by professional dancers on stage.

Laurent Ban's Debut on the Chinese Musical Stage

For the premiere, renowned musical theater actors such as Mao Haifei, Yu Xiaolin, Hu Di, Jiang Qianru, and Chen Yuting will perform at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, bringing to life the suspenseful story of Chang'an. However, what excites the audience the most is the famous French musical actor Laurent Ban, who will play the role of Ge Lao in the production.

At the 2024 Beijing Tianqiao Musical Theatre Gala, Laurent Ban announced his participation in The Longest Day in Chang'an, much to the audience's surprise. Known for his roles in French musicals such as Mozart l'opéra rock and Notre-Dame de Paris, Laurent Ban is beloved for his deep, resonant voice and emotionally compelling performances. He has earned the affectionate nickname "Old Flight" among Chinese fans. This will be his debut performance in a Chinese original musical. Hu Xiaoqing revealed that Laurent Ban's appearance in the musical will be significant.

The musical The Longest Day in Chang'an is produced by the Sichuan Song and Dance Troupe and Miushike Musical, in collaboration with Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, CPAA Theatres, and Hefei Performing Groups. After the national premiere in Beijing, the musical will move to Shanghai for further performances.
