2025-01-15

The Changdian Temple Fair (厂甸庙会) is a traditional folk and folk religious activity popular in Beijing and is one of the national intangible cultural heritages. The Changdian Temple Fair is held from the first to the fifth day of the first lunar month every year. It is grand in scale and rich in Beijing flavor, and is well-known far and wide. After the liberation, the temple fair in Changdian continued to be held until the early 1960s and was still lively and bustling.

Since 1964, due to traffic problems, the Changdian Lantern Market has been suspended for 37 years. In 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government announced the resumption of the Changdian Temple Fair. In the Changdian Temple Fair, there are sweet and delicious sugar-coated haws, kites and windmills with different styles, and other characteristic traditional food products of Changdian.

Talented craftsmen from the north and south also set up stalls on the two main streets to show off their skills. There are also a variety of colorful activities such as lion dance, traditional Beijing flower show, modern dance, Beijing folk character modeling, old Beijing folk photos exhibition, folk handicraft exhibition, traditional commercial "blinds" exhibition, Peking Opera, martial arts, acrobatics, etc.

There are also unique toys, snacks, ornaments, and other specialty items at the Changdian Temple Fair. Many old and famous shops on Liulichang Cultural Street display various woodblock watermarks, cultural relics replicas, pen-making techniques, and antique book restoration skills. Traditional Beijing wedding ceremonies such as sitting in a bridal sedan chair, jumping over a fire pit, and lifting the veil also appeared at the temple fair.

There are also various toys that cannot be found in regular stores, such as buzzing single and double tops, windmills of different sizes that make clattering sounds when waved in the wind, spinning tops that spin wildly on the ground, and five-foot-long large sugar-coated haws, as well as various zodiac toys.
