The stage play Mysterious Lotus Casebook revives Li Lianhua's legendary tale

2025-01-13

From January 10 to 12, the stage play Mysterious Lotus Casebook, adapted from Teng Ping's original novel and the television drama of the same name, was performed at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. Compressing a decade-long tale of martial arts rivalries and heroic vendettas into a two-hour theatrical production, the play presents a world filled with the gleam of swords, justice, and unforgettable legends.

The central narrative of Mysterious Lotus Casebook follows the legendary and turbulent journey of its protagonist, Li Lianhua. Ten years ago, Li Xiangyi, the leader of the Sigu Sect, engaged in a duel with Di Feisheng, the leader of the Jin Yuan Alliance, over the remains of his senior, Dan Gudao, at the East Sea. Both top martial artists vanished into the vast waves after the confrontation. A decade later, the wandering doctor Li Lianhua encounters the chivalrous Fang Duobing and, through unexpected circumstances, finds himself drawn back into the world of martial conflicts. The play chronicles Li Lianhua's protracted farewell to the martial arts world while recounting Li Xiangyi's ascent to becoming the "Number One Under Heaven."

Onstage, the actors showcased their solid acting skills, bringing each character vividly to life. The adrenaline-fueled fight sequences epitomize the martial arts spirit, while the emotional scenes requiring nuanced character exploration were executed with precision. The actors conveyed the intricate emotions of their characters with subtle facial expressions and dynamic body language. Surprisingly, Mysterious Lotus Casebook breaks away from traditional theatrical methods by incorporating dramatic distancing effects. The performers skillfully step in and out of their roles, creating moments of humor and offering the audience a unique aesthetic experience.

The play leverages multimedia technology to blend the dynamic visual language of film with the imaginative potential of theatrical settings. Scenic elements such as the serene Lotus House, tranquil bamboo groves, and a pond of lotuses, as seen on screen, are reimagined on stage through a mix of realistic and abstract representations, enriching the audience's immersive experience.
