Jade from The Kunlun Mountains

2025-01-08

The name of this exhibition, "Jade from The Kunlun Mountains," comes from the classic Mongolian textbook "Thousand Character Classic." The towering Kunlun Mountains are the source of life for Hetian jade, with continuous white snow and rushing rivers. The Qing Dynasty palace Hetian jade that we see today has undergone numerous natural and skilled craftsmanship, and is the crystallization of the hard work and wisdom of the working people, and an important part of Chinese jade culture. The Palace Museum held this special exhibition to showcase the long-standing and brilliant Hetian jade culture. The exhibition selected 258 representative Qing Dynasty palace Hetian jade masterpieces, divided into five units: "Source of Jade," "Jade in Rituals," "Elegant Jade," "Jade in Craftsmanship," and "Jade in Use," in order to interpret the Qing Dynasty Hetian jade culture, and to demonstrate the interaction and integration between various ethnic groups in the Qing Dynasty, and to promote excellent traditional Chinese culture.

The Palace Museum is an important carrier of Chinese civilization for over 5,000 years, a gathering place for excellent traditional Chinese culture, and a historical witness to the integration of diverse cultures. This exhibition takes Hetian jade culture as the starting point to fully demonstrate the development process of Chinese civilization through the medium of jade and mutual learning. The exhibits include Han Dynasty Hetian jade for warding off evil, the "Treasure of the Great Qing Dynasty" designated by Emperor Qianlong as the first of the 25 treasures, the "Mountain Child Collecting Jade" engraved with Emperor Qianlong's imperial poem, and the Tashkent jade artifacts reflecting the interaction between the Qing Dynasty and the outside world. Among them, 130 precious cultural relics are exhibited for the first time.
