Cao Yu's classics Sunrise and Thunderstorm get new productions

2025-01-07

2025 marks the 115th anniversary of the birth of playwright Cao Yu. In the history of modern Chinese drama, many of Cao Yu's classic works have not only deeply revealed the complexity and multifaceted nature of human nature but also, with their unique artistic charm, have transcended time and space, continuing to influence later generations of drama creation. With the development of the times, how to innovate contemporary adaptations of these classics while respecting the originals has become the mission of contemporary dramatists.

At the beginning of the new year, two of Cao Yu's classic masterpieces, Sunrise and Thunderstorm, directed by Wang Keran and Li Liuyi respectively, have made their debut on Beijing's stage. Although both productions have undergone contemporary adaptations, they all adhere to Cao Yu's creative attitude and achieve his dramatic aspirations. This is a tribute to Cao Yu and a return to the literary spirit, as well as a new starting point for these classic re-creations.

Adapting Sunrise and Thunderstorm while Respecting the Spirit of Cao Yu

From December 31, 2024, to January 2, 2025, the Central China Drama version of Sunrise, directed by Wang Keran and starring He Saifei, Zhao Wenxuan, Xu Li, Zhang Su, Li Zonglei, and Li Qixuan, just completed its New Year premiere at the Beijing Performing Arts Center's Drama Hall, marking the beginning of its national tour. This is the third Cao Yu classic adapted by Central China Drama, following Beijing People and Thunderstorm. Central China Drama has long been dedicated to Cao Yu's works.

From January 8 to 12, 2025, the famous Cao Yu play Thunderstorm, directed by Li Liuyi and starring Hu Jun, Lu Fang, Li Hong, Miao Chi, Li Xiaomeng, will have its world premiere at the National Centre for the Performing Arts as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Li Liuyi, who has directed all of Cao Yu's classic works including The Wilderness, Peking Man, Sunrise, and Thunderstorm, is one of China's leading contemporary directors.

The new adaptation of Sunrise has received recognition from Cao Yu's daughter, Wan Fang. The new version of Thunderstorm restores the "Prologue" and "Epilogue."

Li Liuyi, known for his "pure drama" philosophy, has directed many classic plays over the years. His unique thoughts and aesthetic style always bring fresh experiences. For this production of Thunderstorm, he adheres to the artistic concept of "returning to Cao Yu, returning to literature, and returning to drama itself." His goal is not merely to reproduce the original text but to engage in a profound reflection and reconstruction of Chinese drama aesthetics, striving to establish the performance philosophy of this era.
