NCPA Opera La Traviata

2025-01-06

The French literary author Alexandre Dumas fils once said after watching the opera La Traviata, "After one hundred years, my dramas may not be staged again, but the opera La Traviata will be evergreen."Just as he had predicted, La Traviata, Verdi’s opera created in 1853, has become one of the most popular operas staged at major opera houses around the world for over 160 years. With deep empathy, Verdi portrays Violetta’s desire for true love and her passion destroyed by social bias. The story always stirs up emotions in the audience. Arias from the opera, such as Libiamo ne'lieti calici, the classic duet with chorus, the duet Un di, felice, eterea by the hero and heroine, and Violetta’s Addio, del passato, are all very popular even today.

In 2010, the NCPA production of La Traviata was premiered under the baton of maestro Lorin Maazel. Director Henning Brockhaus and his creative team have produced a romantic mix of reality and fantasy for the production, taking the audience back to Paris in the 19th century.
