2024-11-14

The "2024 Beijing Tianqiao Musical Annual Ceremony" (referred to as the "Ceremony") officially launched recently.

Jointly organized by the China Association of Performing Arts and the Central Academy of Drama, and hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Beijing Xicheng District Committee and the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, the Ceremony is a comprehensive cultural and artistic event that includes performances and industry exchanges. Held throughout November, it aims to unite efforts to drive the diversified development of the musical theater industry.

Building on the success of its inaugural edition in 2023, the upgraded 2024 Ceremony will adhere to the principles of innovation rooted in tradition, openness and inclusivity, forward-thinking industry insights, and international diversity. Over the course of a month, it will feature four main sections: Annual Excellence Awards, Industry Forums, Market Report Releases, and Musical Theater Art Education and Talent Cultivation. These sections will honor outstanding contributions to Chinese musical theater industry, set the direction for its development, foster exchanges between Chinese and international musical theater industries, and promote high-quality growth within the sector.

This year's Annual Excellence Awards include 21 categories across two main types, with a total of 87 musical productions and 115 individual applications submitted. Of these, 17 awards will be determined by expert panels, including "Best Imported Musical of the Year," "Best Adapted Musical of the Year," "Best Original Musical of the Year," "Best Male Performer of the Year," "Best Female Performer of the Year," and "Best Producer of the Year." Meanwhile, three awards—"Most Anticipated Musical of the Year," "Most Popular Male Performer of the Year," and "Most Popular Female Performer of the Year"—will be decided by public voting.

The "Most Anticipated Musical of the Year" category has drawn a remarkable array of domestic and international contenders. Among the Chinese original musicals are The Longest Day in Chang'an, Be Somebody, Wing Chun, The Legend of 1900, the revival of Butterfly, and The Impossible Trial. International entries include renowned English-language productions like The Phantom of the Opera and SIX the Musical, the staged concert of German original Ludwig II: The King Is Back, the French productions Molière and Le rouge et le noir - L'Opéra Rock, and the Italian production Casanova.

For the "Most Popular Female Performer of the Year" award, six standout performers—Cao Xiaoqian, Du Xinyan, Huang Ling, Liu Haoran, Xue Jiaying, and Yu Jiaxin—are in the running. Over the past year, these talented actresses have graced stages across theaters, bringing unforgettable characters to life.

In the "Most Popular Male Performer of the Year" category, eight actors are vying for the honor: Jordan Chan, Ming Dao, Pa Sai, Sang Kezhou, Wang Hao, Wang Kai, Jam Hsiao, and Santa Uno (Zando). This diverse group includes both newcomers making bold transitions into musical theater and seasoned performers beloved by audiences.

The Annual Excellence Awards are now in the public voting phase. Fans can cast their votes for their favorite musicals and performers through the official WeChat account of Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. Voting closes at midnight on November 20, with the winners of the three audience-choice honors announced at the 2024 Beijing Tianqiao Musical Annual Ceremony on November 26.

The 2024 Tianqiao Musical Forum, a new addition to this year's event, will feature three sessions: one main forum and two sub-forums. These sessions will explore critical topics such as the development of the musical theater industry, the expansion of the market for original musicals, and strategies for nurturing musical talent. Through keynote speeches, roundtable discussions, and closed-door meetings, industry leaders, experts, and scholars from around the world will gather at the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center to discuss future trends and innovations, providing valuable insights and energy to propel the growth of China's musical theater industry.

Another major highlight is the release of the 2024 Musical Theater Market Report, jointly produced by the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center and the China Association of Performing Arts. This comprehensive white paper will include the latest industry developments, authoritative data, and professional market analysis, offering a vital reference for the continued progress of the musical theater sector in China.

Throughout November, additional musical theater-themed arts activities will be held alongside Tianqiao Performing Arts Center's existing efforts in talent cultivation and public engagement. Events such as theater tours and musical theater workshops will introduce the art form to a broader audience, promoting its cultural significance. Additionally, under the collaboration with institutions like the Central Academy of Drama, Musical Theater Youth Talent Pool will be established, providing emerging artists with platforms to showcase their skills and advance their careers.
