A must-visit destination in Handan with a history spanning 1,400 years

2024-11-14

Ganlu Temple was originally built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, boasting a history of over 1,400 years. According to legend, the temple was initially named Baicao Temple. Princess Nanyang, the third daughter of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, dissatisfied with her father's tyranny, took vows and became a nun here under the Dharma name Miaoshan. Upon learning of this, Emperor Yang was enraged and ordered Baicao Temple to be burned down. Princess Nanyang was rescued by Dou Jiande, the leader of a peasant uprising, and escorted to Cangyan Mountain in western Hebei for secluded practice. During the Tang Dynasty, when Buddhism flourished, the temple was rebuilt and renamed Ganlu Temple. In the Ming Dynasty, it underwent renovations and was renamed Lianhua Nunnery, but later reverted to Ganlu Temple. Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed during wartime in the Republic of China period.

In the 1980s, following the implementation of the Party's religious policies, Mr. Song Furu generously funded the reconstruction of Ganlu Temple, fulfilling the collective wish of Buddhist followers.

Located in Guangfu Ancient City, Handan, Hebei, Ganlu Temple was originally established during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Despite suffering destruction during wars over its 1,400-year history, it has maintained an unbroken line of incense offerings and Dharma teachings. The reconstructed temple is grand and majestic, with solemn Buddhist imagery. On April 25, 2014 (the 26th day of the third lunar month), eminent monks, dignitaries, and devoted followers gathered here for the temple's inauguration and the consecration of the Buddha statues. Nearly ten thousand people witnessed this auspicious ceremony, sharing in the blessings and Dharma joy.

Address: Dongguan Village, Guangfu Ancient City, Handan, Hebei Province, China.
