Cuban national Ballet Swan Lakeset to grace the stage at Beijing Performing Arts Center

2024-11-07

The classic ballet Swan Lake has captivated audiences for generations, and among its many adaptations, the Cuban version choreographed by legendary star Alicia Alonso stands out as truly unique. On November 25-26, the Cuban National Ballet's Swan Lake will take the stage at the Beijing Arts Center as part of the 2024 National Centre for the Performing Arts Dance Festival.

Alicia Alonso, the soul of Cuban ballet, founded the Cuban National Ballet in 1948 and led the company for decades. Despite near-blindness, Alonso remained active on stage for more than half a century. Over her extraordinary career, she performed in over 60 countries and earned more than 260 domestic and international awards for her performances and choreography. Renowned as "the greatest Giselle of the 20th century," she collaborated extensively with celebrated choreographers such as Mikhail Fokine, George Balanchine, and Bronislava Nijinska. Alonso shared a deep connection with China, having visited four times. Reflecting on her experiences, she remarked, "Among the precious memories in my life as an artist, my knowledge of the Chinese people and their ancient culture is one of the most profoundly unforgettable experiences." Alonso passed away in October 2019 in Havana, Cuba, at the age of 98.

The upcoming Swan Lake performance by the Cuban National Ballet, choreographed by Alonso, is one of the company's most popular productions. This version combines a new three-act structure with an epilogue. While retaining the classical essence of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's original work, Alonso reimagined the ballet with the intention of "dusting off the classics," blending vibrant Cuban dance elements with ballet to enhance its technical and dramatic depth. The performance will highlight the unique characteristics of Cuban ballet. Alonso developed a distinct, rigorous teaching method tailored to Cuban dancers, emphasizing lightning-fast footwork, elevated leg movements, powerful jumps, spirited interactions in duets, and precisely synchronized group dances—all hallmarks of Cuban ballet. Additionally, the Cuban Swan Lake will feature localized costumes and staging, showcasing a unique cultural perspective that sets it apart from other classic interpretations worldwide.
