Leo Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace" is a well-known classic of world literature and a calling card of Russian culture. The work takes the significant historical events of early 19th century Russia as its thread, and the experiences of the Bolkonsky, Bezukhov, Rostov, and Kuragin noble families as its main narrative. It weaves together numerous events and characters in the interplay between war and peace, forming an encyclopedic and grand epic. This novel has been adapted into films, TV series, operas, and other art forms many times, and is beloved by audiences worldwide. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is bringing "War and Peace" to the musical stage for the first time, hoping to rejuvenate the classic on a new platform.
The musical version of "War and Peace" examines the relationship between war and peace, celebrates the spirit of patriotism and heroism, and praises the people who love life and pursue happiness after recognizing the essence of life, composing an ever-lasting epic of the people. "War and Peace" is the first original musical produced by the NCPA. Since its establishment, the NCPA has focused on the diversity of performing arts, achieving fruitful results in the introduction, creation, and production of operas, concerts, ballets, dramas, and traditional Chinese operas. With the launch of the new "one theater, three venues" layout, as a new cultural landmark of Beijing, the Beijing Arts Center, based on "song, music, dance, drama, and opera," is committed to "differentiated" performance operations, incorporating musicals into the artistic map of the NCPA. The NCPA's original musical "War and Peace" will be staged at the Beijing Performing Arts Center from December 20th to 29th, and is currently in the final stages of rehearsal.
