2024-10-29

Founded in 1905, Juilliard School is a global leader in performing arts education. As the collaborative educational program established by Juilliard in China, Tianjin Juilliard School is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. In November, the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra will launch its first domestic tour. On November 20, the orchestra will perform at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing as part of the 17th Art Academy Stage Arts Performance. On November 24, they will perform at the Hong Kong City Hall, participating in the Hong Kong New Generation Arts Festival.

The Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra is composed of graduate students from Tianjin Juilliard School and performs around 10 concerts per season. For this tour, the orchestra will be conducted by Resident Conductor Ken Lam and joined by faculty members, violist Hanna Lee and cellist Sihao He. The program includes Zhou Tian's Gift, Bruch's Romance for Viola and Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, and Khachaturian's Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia, showcasing a rich and diverse repertoire of both Chinese and Western works that highlight the orchestra's technical prowess and deep musical understanding.

"Each year, nearly half of the student orchestra comprises new members. Under the guidance and collaboration of our faculty, artistic planning team, and resident conductor, the musicians undergo a transformation from students to professional performers, fostering a unique orchestral culture," said Wei He, CEO and Artistic Director of Tianjin Juilliard School. Emphasizing the importance of ensemble education, a distinctive feature of the school, he added, "This orchestra perfectly embodies the mission of Tianjin Juilliard School—honoring tradition, pursuing excellence, and embracing innovation. We are incredibly proud of the orchestra's upcoming debut domestic tour and look forward to showcasing the results of Juilliard's music education taking root in China to a broader audience."
