Spring in Beijing: Admire Blooming Flowers and Explore Architectural Wonders|Phoenix tree flower

Since ancient times, there has been a Chinese saying, "Plant a phoenix tree to invite the phoenix," reflecting the hope for good luck and happiness through the planting of the Phoenix tree. The phoenix tree is not only a beautiful ornamental and greening species but also has strong resistance to air pollutants like sulfur dioxide and chlorine. Its wood is light and soft, making it an excellent material for traditional musical instruments like the guqin, se, and pipa. As urban greening and beautification continue, various species like the paulownia, French paulownia, and vernicia fordii are all considered part of the "phoenix tree" family. It seems that all "phoenix trees" belong to the same family, with their blossoms filling the canvas of nature, bringing beauty to people's lives.

The phoenix tree blossoms bloom late in spring and exude a serene fragrance. Their late blooming symbolizes steadfastness, much like the budding of a new romance. As the sweltering summer rushes in, the blossoms gently fall like parachutes, carpeting the ground and making way for tender green leaves. This is why people say the language of the phoenix tree blossoms represents "the awakening of love, elegance, mission, and the messenger of love."

Wutong Dadao (Ave) in Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area

In April, if you walk along Hongda Beilu(Rd) in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, you will be surrounded by light purple and pale pink phoenix tree blossoms. This is the famous Wutong Avenue. Over twenty years ago, when the development zone was first established, its founders personally planted these trees. As the saying goes, "Plant a phoenix tree to attract the golden phoenix," and the Yizhuang Economic and Technological Development Area hopes that this beautiful symbolism will guide its future development.

Sunlight filters through the abundant shadows of the phoenix trees, creating a dappled light effect. When a gentle breeze blows, the blossoms fall like snow, scattered along the pathways or landing on the shoulders of passersby, with some drifting down into the gaps of the green grass, reminiscent of a famous Monet painting. After the Yizhuang subway opened, the subway tracks run parallel to Hongda Lu(Rd) for five kilometers. Sitting in the subway car as it glides over the elevated tracks, the purple and white flowers on both sides of the phoenix trees seem to fly by in the brisk wind, giving you the sensation of moving through a sea of flowers, where the scenery is part of the journey.

Nanmofang

Along Nanmofang Lu(Rd), east of Jinsong Qiao (Bridge) on the East Third Ring Road, a whole street is lined with phoenix trees. During the blooming season, you are surrounded by the sight of phoenix flowers and the sweet scent they emit.

In the writings of scholars, phoenix flowers symbolize poetry and romance, while the abundance of these trees evokes childhood memories and a sense of home, infused with the earthy aroma of the soil.

Chegongzhuang

Chegongzhuang Dajie(St) in Beijing is lined with phoenix trees, and in spring, when they bloom, the trees are covered in vibrant flowers that resemble purple clouds descending to the earth, creating a stunning sight. The main characteristic of the phoenix tree is its light purple, bell-shaped flowers that form umbrella-like clusters, blooming before the leaves appear. The leaves have long petioles and pointed edges, while the bark is gray with deep earthy tones, making it easily recognizable.

The phoenix flowers on Chegongzhuang Xilu(Rd), as a native plant of Beijing, were once common as street landscape trees, though they are now less frequently seen. The story of Jiao Yulu, who worked on desertification and afforestation in Lankao, features this tree, known for its strong adaptability and rapid growth. Yet, its blossoms are remarkably beautiful, making it a favorite among many.
