Beijing sees a surge in red tourism during the National Day holiday

2024-10-06

Watching the Five-Starred Red Flag rise slowly over Tiananmen Square, visiting revolutionary sites to recall the heroic days, and viewing red-themed exhibitions to revisit a turbulent history—during the National Day holiday, Beijing is experiencing a surge in red tourism. Citizens and tourists, immersed in a rich festive atmosphere, are continuing the legacy of red culture and deepening their patriotic sentiments.

Beside the red hexagonal pavilion and the clear water, more than 30 university students from Renmin University of China and Beijing Language and Culture University sang 'My Motherland and I' in unison, marking the beginning of the patriotic tour event 'Celebrate the Nation’s Birthday, Visit Red Xiangshan.' The students visited revolutionary sites like Shuangqing Villa and Laiqingxuan, guided by red culture educators, and attended a lively ideological and political class at Lizhu Tower’s 'Examination at Xiangshan' politics school.

'It’s truly an unforgettable experience to revisit that deeply moving red history on the day of the nation’s birthday—it’s extraordinarily meaningful,' said Hou Yuhang, a student at Beijing Language and Culture University.

In the golden days of October, with clear skies and crisp air, the Laijin Yuxuan Pavilion in Zhongshan Park, Beijing, attracted many visitors. They either explored exhibitions to learn about the history of the Young China Association and the Literary Research Society or enjoyed tea while listening to stories of Lu Xun and winter vegetable buns.

'Laijin Yuxuan has a deep red cultural heritage. Since it opened to the public in 2021 as one of the early revolutionary sites in Beijing, it has received more than 180,000 visitors,' said a representative from Zhongshan Park.

This National Day holiday, a steady stream of visitors have flocked to parks to search for red landmarks and express their patriotic feelings. 'Beijing’s municipal parks are rich in red resources, and over the years, the Beijing Park Management Center has placed great emphasis on the restoration of revolutionary sites, ancient courtyards, exhibition improvements, and environmental upgrades. Revisiting red stories at the parks' red cultural sites and patriotic education bases has become a significant activity for citizens and tourists alike,' said Zhang Yong, Party Secretary and Director of the Beijing Park Management Center.

Red tourism has become a popular theme for National Day travel in Beijing. According to Chen Xiaoshuang, a researcher at Qunar Big Data Research Institute, keywords like the flag-raising ceremony, Tiananmen Square, the Military Museum, Xiangshan, and Peking University’s Red Building saw the fastest increase in search volume on the platform, reflecting a growing demand for red tourism.

On October 2, visitors explored the exhibition 'Art for the People'—a special exhibition celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Photo by Xinhua News Agency reporter Yang Shujun.

The exhibition 'Art for the People,' currently held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing Arts Center, displays numerous precious artifacts, including records of the song 'The East Is Red,' sample films from the opera 'The White-Haired Girl,' and the screenplay of the film 'Growing Up in Battle,' along with historical photos and videos.

Beijing’s rich red culture provides a deep reservoir for red tourism resources. During the National Day holiday, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism launched 10 red tourism routes, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the capital’s red charm, with tours like 'The Founding Blueprint: A Journey Through Red Memories' and 'Red Star Shines: A Journey Through the History of Red Films.'
