Explore the Most Beautiful Hutongs in Beijing|History of canals exploration route

The total route is 3.5 kilometers long and includes notable spots such as the Grand Canal, Nandajie (S. St), Yi Xiang (1st Alley) of Liyuan Zhongjie (St), and Yi Xiang. Here, the elements of the canal and the streets are cleverly intertwined. After admiring the ancient Grand Canal, visitors can learn about the history of canal transportation on Gong'an Xuexiao Lu (Rd), where reliefs depicting canal scenes are embedded. They can also explore the unique pavilions and landscapes along Yi Xiang (1st Alley) of Liyuan Zhongjie (St).

The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal was first constructed in 486 BCE and consists of three major sections and ten river segments: the Sui and Tang Grand Canal (Wei He section, Tongji Canal section), the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (Tonghui River section, North Canal section, South Canal section, Huitong River section, Middle River section, Huaiyang Canal section, Jiangnan Canal section), and the Zhedong Canal (Zhedong Yunhe). It connects the five major river systems—Hai He, Yellow River, Huai River, Yangtze River, and Qiantang River—spanning eight provinces and 27 cities, with a total length of 2,700 kilometers. The Grand Canal is the earliest, largest, and longest canal in the world, with the longest continuous operation time. It represents an outstanding achievement in hydraulic engineering before the Industrial Revolution and has had a profound influence on the history of China and the world.

The Chinese Grand Canal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in June 2014. The heritage application selected representative river segments and important heritage sites from various parts of the canal. The listed heritage includes 27 river sections, with a total length of 1,011 kilometers, and 58 related heritage sites. These heritage types include water engineering relics such as sluices, embankments, dams, bridges, water gates, towpaths, docks, and dangerous works, as well as auxiliary and management facilities such as warehouses, official residences, post stations, palaces, guild halls, and tax checkpoints. In addition, some ancient buildings and historical cultural districts related to the cultural significance of the Grand Canal are included. The total heritage area covers 20,819 hectares, with a buffer zone of 54,263 hectares.

In Beijing, the listed river sections include the Tonghui River in Xicheng District within the Old City of Beijing—Shichahai including Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai; the Tonghui River Beijing Old City section in Dongcheng District (the old Yuhe Road), which runs from Wanning Bridge in the west to Dongbuyaqiao in the east, with a length of about 0.5 kilometers; and the Tonghui River Tongzhou section in Tongzhou District, which runs from Yongtong Bridge in the west to Tongzhou Beiguan sluice in the east, with a length of about 5 kilometers. Important heritage sites include Chengqing Shangzha in Xicheng District, located near Wanning Bridge, and Chengqing Zhongzha in Dongcheng District, located near Dongbuyaqiao.

Beijing Central Green Forest Park

Central Green Forest Park is located south of the Grand Canal and east of the Nanliuhuan (S. 6th Ring Rd), at the intersection of the innovation development axis and the ecological civilization belt of Beijing's sub-center, Beijing Municipal Administrative Center. It is a vibrant urban forest that integrates ecological restoration, citizen leisure, and cultural heritage. Covering a total area of approximately 11.2 square kilometers—three times the size of New York's Central Park—this park is full of flowers and scenic views, acting as a natural oxygen bar while offering citizens diverse activity spaces. Over the past five years, Beijing has been unfolding a blueprint of interconnected blue and green spaces, creating a fresh and bright environment where water and city coexist. The area where Central Green Forest Park is located, Beijing's sub-center, is becoming a new highland for the capital's high-quality development.

Grand Canal Forest Park

Tongzhou Grand Canal Forest Park is located on both sides of the North Canal, starting from the Lutong Bridge on the Sixth Ring Road in the north and ending at the Wuyao Bridge in the south. The total length of the river is 8.6 kilometers, covering a total area of 10,700 mu, building "one river, two banks, six gardens and 18 views". The park adheres to the design concept of "taking green as body and water as soul to achieve harmony between forest and water".
