Chinese 24 Solar Terms|Frost's Descent

Shuangjiang, or Frost's Descent, is the last solar term of autumn, signaling that winter is approaching. It typically occurs on October 23 or 24 each year, when the sun reaches a longitude of 210 degrees. On this term, nighttime temperatures can drop to around 0°C, and moisture in the air condenses directly into white, loose ice crystals on the ground or plants, forming frost.

Meteorological conditions

Around the time of Shuangjiang, the average temperature in most parts of the country begins to decline significantly, with the temperature difference between day and night reaching its maximum for the year. The period from Shuangjiang (Frost's Descent) to Lidong (Beginning of Winter) often sees the fastest temperature drop in northern regions.

Cultural significance

Climbing

The air in the autumn forests is fresh, with fewer dust and pollutants in the atmosphere. Climbing to high places during Shuangjiang offers a refreshing view and a sense of tranquility.

Appreciating Chrysanthemums

There is an ancient saying, "Frost brings the blooming of chrysanthemums," making climbing mountains and enjoying chrysanthemum flowers elegant activities during this time. The Shuangjiang period coincides with the peak bloom of autumn chrysanthemums, and many places in China hold chrysanthemum festivals at this time, featuring flower viewing and drinking.

Tasting Frost Persimmons

Persimmons typically ripen completely around Shuangjiang, with thin skin, plenty of flesh, and delightful flavor, making them highly favored. This has led to the custom of eating persimmons during this solar term.

As Shuangjiang arrives, autumn dryness intensifies, leading to symptoms like dry throat, dry nose, and dry skin. It’s advisable to consume foods that nourish and hydrate the lungs, such as seasonal fruits like pears and apples, which are sweet and juicy, as well as vegetables like carrots, winter melons, and lotus roots. Other good options include honey, white fungus, and lilies.
