The Awakening of Insects, also known as "Start of Insects", is the third of the twenty-four solar terms. It marks the beginning of spring thunder, which awakens hibernating insects underground, hence the name.

Awakening of Insects reflects the phenomenon of natural organisms sprouting and growing in response to changes in rhythm. By this time, energy rises, temperatures warm, spring thunder sounds, and rainfall increases, bringing vitality to all living things. Agricultural production is closely linked to the rhythms of nature, making this solar term significant in ancient farming culture as a reflection of natural cycles.

The floral symbols associated with Waking of Insects include peach blossoms, hawthorn blossoms, and roses.

Peach blossoms: During this period, peach blossoms in the north may still be in bud, while in the south, they bloom into a breathtaking sea of flowers.

Hawthorn blossoms: When hawthorn flowers bloom, their golden-yellow petals adorn the branches, creating a striking visual that resembles stars fallen to the earth, radiating brilliance.

Roses: These climbing, deciduous plants are resilient and can beautify gardens and hedges. Their flowers come in shades of cream, pale yellow, golden, pink, and bright red, forming stunning clusters.

There is also a custom of eating pears during Waking of Insects. On one hand, as temperatures rise and the air becomes drier, pears are beneficial for nourishing the lungs and alleviating dryness. On the other hand, the word for pear sounds similar to "departure" in Chinese, so eating pears during this time symbolizes a wish to stay away from pests and disasters.
