"Start of Spring" is the first of the twenty-four solar terms. These solar terms were established by observing the annual movement of the sun. The Beginning of Spring begins when the sun reaches a longitude of 315 degrees.
Meteorological conditions
The Start of Spring signifies the prelude to spring. After this date, temperatures begin to rise, daylight hours increase, and precipitation becomes more frequent. However, the weather can still be "warm yet cold". Meteorologically, the start of spring is defined as when the average daily temperature remains stable above 10°C for five consecutive days. According to this standard, when the Beginning of Spring arrives, only about 670,000 square kilometers of China's 9.6 million square kilometers experience spring.
In early spring, the difference between the daily high and low temperatures often exceeds 10°C. Strong winds and temperature drops remain prominent across most regions, often accompanied by light snowfall.
Floral symbols of the season

The floral symbols associated with the Start of Spring include the forsythia, cherry blossoms, and witch hazel.
Forsythia: As one, two... and more yellow buds begin to bloom, they break the monotony of winter, acting as messengers of spring. Forsythia, along with plum blossoms, narcissus, and camellias, is known as one of the "Four Friends of the Snow".
Cherry blossoms: Clusters of blooming cherry blossoms sway in the breeze, with petals falling like confetti, bringing greetings of spring.
Witch Hazel: Witch hazel exudes a rich fragrance, with large, brightly colored flowers that are both visually striking and aromatic. Witch hazel looks toward spring, signaling that the vibrant days of blooming flowers and green leaves are just around the corner.
Cultural significance

The saying "A year's plan begins in spring" reflects the importance of this season. During the Start of Spring people often partake in the tradition of "biting spring." In northern regions, people eat spring pancakes and radishes, while in southern regions, they enjoy spring rolls. Although the foods vary, they all express a shared anticipation for spring. Despite the cold weather, people's hearts yearn for spring as the sun's direct rays draw nearer.
