WHEN THE GREAT WAY PREVAILS Special Exhibition of Confucian Culture

2024-10-14

On September 29th, the "WHEN THE GREAT WAY PREVAILS Special Exhibition of Confucian Culture" opened at the Palace Museum. The year 2024 marks the 2575th anniversary of Confucius's birth and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the International Confucian Association. To enhance the cohesion of the Chinese nation and the influence of Chinese culture, and to promote the study and dissemination of Confucianism and excellent traditional culture, the Palace Museum and the International Confucian Association co-hosted this exhibition. The exhibition, which runs from October 1, 2024, to January 5, 2025, in the Meridian Gate Exhibition Hall of the Forbidden City, features 380 pieces (sets) of exhibits from nearly 30 domestic and international archaeological and cultural institutions, including the Palace Museum's collection. The theme of this exhibition, "Great Way of Conduct," is derived from the "Book of Rites · Rites of Zhou" chapter, expressing Confucianism's pursuit of a beautiful social order and moral ethos characterized by public ownership of the world, selection of the capable, and trustworthiness and harmony. It is not only a classic expression of Confucian "Great Harmony" social ideals but also continuously endowed with new era connotations, reflecting the unique understanding and mission of the Chinese nation in building a community with a shared future for mankind. The exhibition is divided into three sections: "Tracing Antiquity to Seek Confucianism," "Transforming the World," and "Model for All Ages." Through rich archaeological evidence, the preservation of classics, and cultural relics collections, it explores and organizes the historical formation of Confucian culture, elaborates on the core civilization concepts of Confucian thought, and showcases its profound influence across the world.

Exhibition Period: October 1, 2024, to January 5, 2025
