Three Hills and Five Gardens | Jingyi Garden

Jingyi Garden, located within Fragrant Hills in the northwest suburb of Beijing, is a royal palace garden built on mountainous terrain during the Qing Dynasty. During the Kangxi reign (1662-1722), Emperor Kangxi constructed "Fragrant Hills Palace" near Xiangshan Temple while touring the scenic temples and ancient sites of Fragrant Hills. In the eighth year of the Qianlong reign (1743), Qianlong Emperor (Hongli) of the Qing Dynasty visited Fragrant Hills and was captivated by its natural beauty, deciding to build imperial royal garden on the basis of existing palace. In the tenth year of the Qianlong reign (1745), the famous Twenty-Eight Scenic Spots were completed, and Emperor Qianlong bestowed the name "Jingyi Garden" upon it, which became renowned throughout Beijing. Jingyi Garden covers a total area of 153.3 hectares, with winding palace walls following the mountain for a total length of approximately 5 kilometers. Leveraging the layered greenery of the Xishan Mountain, Jingyi Garden in Fragrant Hills, together with Yuquan Hill and Yufeng Pagoda, creates a multi-level depth of scenery, forming the picturesque backdrop of the royal gardens in the western suburb of Beijing and even the entire plain of the northwest suburb. From the vantage point of the mountain summit, one can admire the serene beauty of the lakes and mountains of Jingming and Qingyi Gardens below, while gazing far into the distance to enjoy the countless scenic views of Beijing.
