Three Hills and Five Gardens | Longevity Hill

Longevity Hill is a branch of the Yanshan Mountain, with a height of 58.59 meters and an elevation of 108.94 meters, facing Kunming Lake.

In the seventh year of the Ming Emperor Hongzhi reign (1494), Luoshi, the wet nurse of Emperor Xiaozong, built the Yuanjing Temple at the foot of the hill. In the early Qing Dynasty, it served as a pasture for the imperial horses. In the fifteenth year of the Qianlong reign (1750), to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of the Empress Dowager, the Dabao’en Yanshou Temple was built on the old site of the Yuanjing Temple. The following year, the hill was renamed Longevity Hill (Wanshou Hill). The excavated soil from the expansion of Kunming Lake was piled on the hill according to the original layout, creating a symmetrical slope on both the east and west sides and forming the main part of the entire park. Most of the buildings built on the mountain during the Qianlong period were burned down by the Anglo-French allied forces in 1860, and most of the existing buildings were rebuilt during the Guangxu period.

The buildings were constructed along the hillside and the existing structures were rebuilt by Empress Dowager Cixi after they were destroyed by the Anglo-French Allied Force.
