On the evening of September 3, the "Great Shows in Beijing" 2024 Performance Season officially commenced at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Five artistic representatives, including Tian Qinxin, Feng Yuanzheng, Li Xincao, Chi Xiaoqiu, and Elhaida Dani, together inaugurated the season. The classic play Beijing Fayuansi was performed as the opening production.
The "Great Shows in Beijing" 2024 Performance Season is hosted by the Communication Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism. As a key component of the Beijing Culture Forum, this season is an important brand established to advance Beijing's development as the "Capital of Performing Arts" and to enhance the "Great Shows in Beijing" cultural reputation. It invites outstanding domestic and international theater troupes and premium productions to perform in Beijing, creating an artistic platform for gathering, showcasing, and exchanging.
Five themed sections present an artistic feast.
This year's performance season, themed “Innovating Arts and Offering Excellence to the People,” has been upgraded and relaunched with a focus on five major thematic sections: grand theater performances, new performance space showcases, quality performances in universities, drama film screenings, and drama salons. Over the course of two months, more than 50 cultural and performing arts groups and institutions will gather in Beijing, presenting 114 high-quality productions across over 40 theaters and new performance spaces. This diverse array of performances will continuously illuminate the capital's stage and provide a rich artistic feast for the public, showcasing the artistic charm of the "Capital of Performing Arts." Additionally, industry artists and experts will be invited to lead six themed salon activities, focusing on the performing arts industry and notable works, allowing drama enthusiasts to appreciate fine plays, exchange creative insights, and explore future developments.
Outstanding domestic and international productions showcase
This year's performance season aims to gather outstanding domestic and international productions in Beijing, creating a high-end platform for artistic exchange and collaboration. It aligns with events such as the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France and the China-Russia Cultural Year, increasing efforts to introduce international and out-of-province productions. The season features 30 exceptional productions from countries and regions including France, Russia, the UK, and Poland, such as the musical Notre-Dame de Paris, the play War and Peace, the dance drama Romeo and Juliet, and the high-definition video play Hamlet. Additionally, 16 productions from central and out-of-province theater troupes, including the ballet Hong Se Niang Zi Jun (The Red Detachment of Women）, the play Dream of the Red Chamber, and the dance drama Wind Rises Over Dachen, will also take the stage in the capital, highlighting the international and open nature of the performance season.
27 productions making their debut
This performance season focuses on creating a platform for stage art works with a demonstrative effect, with 27 productions making their debut on this stage. Among them, 9 productions including the play The Swallow, the play Alley-Oop, and the musical Northward will have their national premieres. Additionally, 18 productions such as the play Zero Liturgy, the play Littoral, the dance drama Tian Gong Kai Wu (The Exploitation of the Works of Nature) and Love Song of Kangding, the modern Peking opera Min Fang Lei, the Xiang opera Fenghuo Qiaohun, and the high-definition film opera Carmen will have their premieres and screenings in Beijing, contributing to the development of the “Capital of Performing Arts.”
13 new performance spaces showcase fresh vitality
This performance season will feature 28 productions across 13 new performance spaces, including the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center New Space Theater, Fanxing Theater Village, Drum Tower West Theater, Nanluo Theater, Mahua FunAge A66 Theater, Musicfans, Yanliao Guild Hall, and Beijing Temple Theater. The season will present a diverse range of performances such as solo acts, magic shows, talk shows, suspense dramas, and candlelight concerts, all showcasing youthful and innovative formats. This vibrant array of performances highlights Beijing's role as a " Capital of Performing Arts " and its dynamic creative energy.
New features and enhanced benefits
This performance season continues its partnership with Damai.com to distribute 1.3 million yuan in 100-yuan discount vouchers, bringing savings directly to the audience. By collaborating with Beijing's Cultural Consumption Season and promotional initiatives, theaters and troupes are offering various discounts such as reduced prices, buy-one-get-one-free, and free admissions to benefit the public. Sixteen high-quality productions will be presented in the capital's universities, with works like the Pride of Heaven, Songs of Nie Er, and The Frog in the Well making their debut in the season, providing a larger stage for young students.
Additionally, the performance season introduces new features such as drama flash mobs, outdoor performances, ticket exchanges, and check-in rewards to enhance the city's theatrical atmosphere and offer audiences a fresh experience. To keep the public informed about performances and related activities, updates will be available on the “Great Shows in Beijing Information” WeChat account and the “Early Access to Performances” mini-program.
