Embroidery from the Tu Ethnic Group shines in Beijing

2024-09-18

On the afternoon of September 15th, the Qianli Art Space at Youyi Shopping City in Beijing showcased embroidery works by the Tu ethnic group from Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County in Qinghai Province. This display attracted many citizens who were reading in the bookstore or shopping in the mall. On that day, the "Guarding Hope - Minhe County Rural Exhibition & Market" Mid-Autumn special event was held here, and the week-long exhibition came to a successful conclusion.

Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County in Qinghai Province have a millennium-old cultural heritage, encompassing not only embroidery and other intangible cultural arts but also ancient rituals like the Tu ethnic Nadun Festival, as well as unique art forms like flowers and Qin Opera. In 2023, an earthquake dealt a heavy blow to Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County. At a crucial moment in post-disaster reconstruction, the Beijing Hope Charity Foundation Youth Media Center took Beijing's youth to Minhe, bringing back local intangible heritage products. These were displayed on the first floor of Youyi Shopping City in Beijing, conveying the resilient spirit shown by the local residents in the aftermath of the disaster.

During the event, several young people acted as hosts and narrators, sharing the background of the exhibition, introducing the history and heritage stories of Tuzhuo embroidery, the challenges faced by the Minhe County Qin Opera troupe, and engaging with the producers of local intangible heritage products. They invited citizens to visit the exhibition area to learn about the rural sentiments of Minhe County through the display boards. In the words of these young individuals, "When we entered Minhe, we saw not only the beautiful mountains and rivers and culture but also the challenges and efforts faced by the local residents."

This event was organized by the Beijing Hope Charity Foundation Youth Media Center, co-sponsored by Boundless Museum and Youyi Shopping City in Beijing. It received support from the government and education bureau of Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County in Qinghai Province.
