The Qingcheng Palace ancient architecture complex has a new look

2024-09-18

After the removal of non-historical buildings and the restoration of cultural heritage structures, the magnificent layout and exquisite decorations of the ancient Qingcheng Palace complex at Temple of the God of Agriculture have been revitalized, with its historical appearance greatly restored. In the future, the Qingcheng Palace complex will be open to the public.

The Beijing Central Axis, first constructed during the Yuan Dynasty, has a history spanning over 700 years and has witnessed the evolution of the city of Beijing. It is a significant symbol that embodies the prominent characteristics of Chinese civilization. The ancient Qingcheng Palace complex is a dazzling gem within the Temple of the God of Agriculture, a royal sacrificial site on the Central Axis. Built during the Ming Dynasty, Qingcheng Palace was originally named "Fasting Palace," and it was renamed Qingcheng Palace during the Qing Dynasty. It served as the site for celebration ceremonies after the emperor personally conducted the plowing ritual.

The restoration project of the ancient Qingcheng Palace complex began in June of last year and has now been completed. The restoration work followed the principle of "minimal intervention," with targeted measures addressing specific issues in the heritage buildings. For instance, repairs were made to the tiled roofs to prevent leaks, and the palace walls were restored, including the replacement of missing wall caps.

Today, within the ancient Qingcheng Palace complex, temporary buildings have been removed, and the ground paved with traditional materials has been restored, highlighting the authenticity and integrity of the courtyard.

To meet the needs of future public use, the restoration project also included the planning and installation of basic infrastructure in the courtyard. This involved upgrading water supply and drainage systems, installing air conditioning and necessary lighting, as well as setting up surveillance systems, fire water systems, and lightning protection facilities.

"The Qingcheng Palace ancient architecture complex is currently in the process of actively improving infrastructure and exhibition arrangements. Once all conditions are in place, it will be opened to the public. In the future, we aim to transform the complex into a city reception hall, a traditional culture experience zone, and a platform for academic exchange on world cultural heritage, further raising public awareness of historical and cultural heritage preservation," said Pan Wei, Deputy Director of the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum.
