Drama "Thunderstorm"
Beijing People's Art Theatre
Highlights: A timeless classic spanning nearly a century, "Thunderstorm" is hailed as "the most outstanding representative of Chinese drama in the past hundred years."
For Beijing People's Art Theatre, *Thunderstorm* is undoubtedly an artistic pinnacle that cannot be overlooked. Published in 1934, and first performed by Beijing People's Art Theatre in 1954, *Thunderstorm* is a milestone in modern Chinese drama with profound significance. Guo Moruo praised it as "a rare masterpiece," while Mao Dun acclaimed it as "the thunderstorm that shocked the seas that year." This work cemented Cao Yu's outstanding position in the history of Chinese drama.
Centered around the theme of "fate," *Thunderstorm* weaves a narrative spanning several decades, involving two families, eight characters, and thirty years of intertwined grudges and conflicts. Each character struggles against their fate, not only as vivid individuals but also as reflections of that era and society.
On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the publication of the *Thunderstorm* script and the 70th anniversary of its first performance by Beijing People's Art Theatre, *Thunderstorm* returns to the Capital Theatre for a new round of performances. The audience is invited to explore the enduring power and value of this classic Chinese drama. Over the 90 years since *Thunderstorm* was first published in *Literary Quarterly* in July 1934, and the 70 years since its first performance by Beijing People's Art Theatre in June 1954, this production has remained a steadfast classic, consistently nourishing the hearts of its audience.
"Writing *Thunderstorm* was an urgent emotional need. I thought of how pitiful human beings are, with their ambitious minds, believing they control their own destinies, only to be often controlled by something else—whether it be their emotions, understanding, an unknown force, chance, or circumstances. Living proudly in a small cage, thinking they are roaming freely in a vast world—aren't humans, who claim to be the spirit of all things, doing the most foolish things? I wrote the conflicts in this play with a compassionate heart. I sincerely hope that those watching the play will look upon these earthly beings with a compassionate eye." — Cao Yu, *Preface to Thunderstorm*
"Fan Yi and Lu Dahai represent the 'primal' and 'savage' forces of 'newcomers' in *Thunderstorm*, embodying either 'hate or love, nothing in between,' which was an unprecedented image in previous Chinese dramas. Their stories thus form two distinct modern Chinese tragedies." — Zhu Yuhong (Associate Professor, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, School of Humanities, Tongji University)

Drama "Camel Xiangzi"
Beijing Performance & Arts Group
**Highlight:** The all-male cast, directed by Fang Xu—often referred to as "the person who understands Lao She the best"—brings together a powerful lineup for this production. The play features Shu Ji, Lao She’s eldest daughter, as the literary consultant, and the double award-winning actress Siqin Gaowa, who played "Huniu," as the artistic consultant.
As a literary master renowned both in China and abroad, Lao She used his unique narrative style and delicate emotional portrayals to create numerous thought-provoking and moving stories. *Camel Xiangzi* is one of his most significant works. In this novel, Lao She fully showcases his ability to craft vivid characters such as Xiangzi, Huniu, and Liu Siye, making *Camel Xiangzi* a classic in modern Chinese literature.
The story follows the rise and fall of Xiangzi, a rickshaw puller in Beiping during the Republic of China period. Strong-willed and determined, Xiangzi moves from the countryside to Beiping, hoping to achieve his ideal life through hard work. He tirelessly pulls his rickshaw, eventually saving enough money to buy his own. Just as he begins to settle into his hard-earned life, fate plays cruel tricks on him, and Xiangzi's struggles lead him to a tragic downfall.
The stage adaptation of *Camel Xiangzi* continues Fang Xu's signature "broad strokes" theatrical style, with bold experimentation in set design, lighting, costumes, music, and makeup. The aim is to create a new impression of Lao She through a modern aesthetic, resulting in a contemporary drama that is rich in minimalistic beauty, imagination, and creativity.
"Drama *Camel Xiangzi* is a dialogue between Fang Xu and Lao She, and through Xiangzi, between Lao She and the audience. This interaction blends seamlessly into the play, bringing a new poetic, musical, and emotional quality that represents a successful and conscious directorial re-creation." —Liu Wei, Director and Doctoral Advisor at the Central Academy of Drama.
"In *Camel Xiangzi,* the theme of questioning the meaning of one's existence is a successful elevation of Lao She’s original theme. Although this theme is present in Lao She’s work, it was not the central focus. Fang Xu and his team found this seed, nurtured it, and elevated it into a soul, making it the best tribute to Lao She—a manifestation of the creative genius of an excellent playwright. This dialogue is very well done." —Li Ling, Professor and Doctoral Advisor at Beijing Language and Culture University.
"Fang Xu’s value lies in his efforts to delve into Lao She’s inner world, aiming to show the audience his understanding of the true Lao She and his original style. *Camel Xiangzi* should be performed more often and even taken abroad so that both Chinese and international audiences can see the real Lao She, which is of great significance." —Li Longyin, Honorary Vice Chairman of the Beijing Dramatists Association.
"The refinement of themes like resilience and dignity in *Camel Xiangzi,* the redefinition of Huniu's character, and the stylized, non-realistic, non-linear stage presentation are all highly significant artistic contributions." —Song Baozhen, Director of the Drama Research Institute at the China National Academy of Arts.

Drama "International Inn"
Nanjing University Art Master's Troupe
**Highlight:** "This is a work that feels distant from our small world, more like a harsh and expansive wasteland." Renowned playwright Guo Shixing praised the piece for restoring his "faith in young Chinese playwrights."
On September 10, 2009, a violent conflict erupted between the Nanxu County Highway Bureau and the workers of the third project section of the Nanxu Expressway over construction disputes. During this altercation, the cafeteria owner of the third section, Feng Xian'er, was stomped in the face by the bureau chief. What could have been resolved with money, Feng Xian'er instead chose to pursue justice for herself.
It’s a simple conflict of interest, with no elaborate scheming. This incident, like countless other comedies that have occurred on this land, arose out of nowhere, ending abruptly yet full of vitality. The response to the situation is imbued with the absurdity and wisdom characteristic of Chinese society. *The International Hotel* masterfully portrays the "transformation of the Chinese social mindset" with remarkable precision.

Peking Opera "Li Kui Visits His Mother" (Full Performance)
Dalian Peking Opera House, National Peking Opera Company
**Highlight:** Li Kui is a significant character in the "Water Margin" story, whose depiction has continually evolved in classical novels and operas, primarily focusing on his social attributes. The story tells of Li Kui, a hero of Liangshan, who is deeply concerned about his mother. Song Jiang allows him to return home to visit her and secretly sends Zhu Fu and Zhu Gui to protect him. Li Kui's mother, who has missed her son for a long time, cries daily, damaging her eyes, and suffers from cold and hunger due to the neglect of her eldest son, Li Da.
