Red okra and kabocha squash: A harvest of vegetables in Huairou, Beijing

2024-08-19

In the vegetable garden of Tanghekou Town, Beijing's Huairou District, recently, an array of vegetables has come to maturity. Staff from the Tanghe Xinyuan Specialized Agricultural Cooperative are busily packaging these colorful crops, preparing them for market to bring these high-quality vegetables into homes across the region.

Covering an area of 130 acres, this vegetable garden boasts a variety of unique produce. As sunflowers bloom, their golden petals contrast beautifully with the red okra, kabocha squash, and beets—crops not often found in northern fields—creating a lively pastoral scene. This lush garden, located near National Highway 111, has become a bright spot for passing drivers and tourists.

In addition to Xiaohuangtang Village's vegetable garden, Tanghekou Town plans to integrate 200 acres of experimental rice fields in partnership with Beijing University of Agriculture, embracing the concept of landscape agriculture. This initiative aims to establish a new landmark for countryside tourism that combines science popularization and recreation. Tanghekou Harvest Festival of this year will also be held here. Visitors will have the chance to engage with modern agricultural technology and stroll through the rice fields, enjoying an idyllic life.

In recent years, Tanghekou Town has focused on developing distinctive and urban agriculture, and has successfully launched a range of signature products like Tanghe rice, sweet potatoes, and anthocyanin-rich corn. This approach has paved the way for the integrated development of agriculture, culture, and tourism. Going forward, Tanghekou will continue to enhance landscape agriculture through flower planting, creative landscape design, and the addition of mobile decorations, elevating the overall aesthetic appeal of the countryside. The agricultural landscapes of Xiaohuangtang Village, Dongwanzi Village, Hou’anling Village, Dahuangtang Village, and Zhuanghu Goumen Village will be linked together, continuously shaping Tanghekou Town into a flagship of urban agriculture.
