Activities scheduled for science popularization summer camps in parks

2024-07-23

On July 20th, the 2024 Science Popularization Summer Camp organized by the Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks kicked off at Yuyuantan Park. A total of 76 activities spanning over 150 sessions will continue until August 31st.

Guided by staff from Yuyuantan Park, students participated in engaging and educational activities such as nature-themed competitive games, lotus leaf fountain experiments, science-themed board games, and creative handmade fans. Through activities like flower hunting, birdwatching, insect exploration, puzzle-solving, and challenge missions, they delved into the relationships between species and their environments, fostering teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. These engaging activities sparked students' passion for ecology, which marks the beginning of the science popularization summer camp.

During the summer vacation, municipal parks and the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture have prepared a wealth of science-themed tours and summer camps for students.

Parks like Yuyuantan, Xiangshan, China National Botanical Garden, and Garden Expo Park will host special activities that allow children to explore the tracks of fireflies and frogs on cool summer evenings and observe nocturnal animal and plant behaviors.

The Taoranting Park has meticulously crafted a nighttime lakeside market, blending tradition with modernity, culture with fashion. The park will also present fashionable and entertaining cultural performances, offering a feast for the senses to both citizens and visitors.

A series of cultural activities will also take place during the summer camp. At Yuyuantan Park, an exhibition about oracle bone script and calligraphy will be held. The Summer Palace and Zhongshan Park will tie in with the Double Seventh Festival and organize science popularization activities like "Counting the Days of Heat in Midsummer," "Exploring the Double Seventh Festival in the Summer Palace," and "Experiencing Ancient Touhu Games."

The search for amazing flora and fauna is equally thrilling. The Temple of Heaven, Zhongshan Park, Xiangshan Park, and Taoranting Park continue to organize a series of activities centered around ancient trees. Through lectures by science educators, outdoor interactions, and occupational experiences, campers gain a close-up understanding of ancient trees and knowledge about their appreciation and protection. At Beijing Zoo, educational programs introduce students to the basics of bird incubation and nurturing behaviors.
