Book from Beijing shines at Hong Kong Book Fair

2024-07-23

The 34th Hong Kong Book Fair opened on Wednesday in Hong Kong, with Beijing making its debut as the theme city. Author Guo Dashu was invited to the fair to share insights about his historical novel, Shangyangtai.

The book fair themed "Film and Television Literature," features 67 publishing and cultural organizations from the Chinese mainland.

Shangyangtai revolves around the protection and contention over a calligraphy work by Chinese poet Li Bai, depicting both popular and royal struggles.

At the fair, Guo explored the concept of "literary martial arts," examining historical literary emperors and the artistic qualities of characters appearing in Shangyangtai, like Wanyan Jing, the sixth emperor of the Jin Dynasty.

He compared scenes from classic martial arts films, discussing the interplay between urban space and martial arts themes.

The audience was captivated by the vibrant and ancient depiction of the capital and its colorful characters.

Shangyangtai not only chronicles the history of Jin Zhongdu, capital of the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), but also marks the origin of Beijing as a capital.

As the first book in the Zhongdu trilogy, the novel brings Jin Zhongdu out of the historical haze, offering a touchstone for Beijing's historical essence amid its modern growth.

Guo Dashu announced that the second book of the trilogy is nearing completion and is scheduled to meet readers next year.
