Exhibition of four Korean artists opens at the CAFA Art Museum

2024-07-09

Ink painting, ceramics, and other arts are not only ancient Eastern cultural heritage but also continuously rejuvenated in contemporary art creation. On July 7, the "Rituals of Repetition: Portals to Eternity" opened at the Central Academy of Fine Art Museum. The four participating Korean artists, while utilizing traditional media, have also transformed them into contemporary artistic expressions.

In the exhibition, artist Lee Jin Woo's work "The Long River," a massive painting spanning 5 meters, is being publicly displayed in China for the first time. Accompanying it is a series of ink paintings created in 2008, depicting the beauty of China, including 16 major works themed around "water." Artist Shin Youngho's ink creations stem from his scholarly study of traditional Eastern calligraphy techniques. His works emphasize the rhythmic flow of brushstrokes, exhibiting a breathing-like cadence.

In the exhibition hall, a red "bamboo forest" stands tall, an interactive bamboo installation created by artist Lee Seung Hee, composed of thousands of ceramic bamboo segments. His work advances the transformation of traditional ceramic craftsmanship into contemporary ceramic and installation art. Artist Chang Jinwon's paintings explore a rich variety of visual colors. His 19 works, which investigate the essence of light, guide the audience beyond the mere visual and physical realms to explore the depths of darkness, shadow, and light.

Jin Jun, the director of the Central Academy of Fine Art Museum, remarked that the works of the four participating artists in this exhibition reflect deep research and practice with traditional media, a love for cultural heritage, and its transmission. Simultaneously, they integrate personal reflections and insights into modern life, showcasing the vitality and creativity of contemporary Korean art. This exhibition serves as a window into understanding contemporary Korean art and provides a new platform for cultural exchange between China and Korea. The exhibition will continue until August 25th.
